8 aprile 2014: una data da segnare. Perché, dopo oltre dodici anni, giunge al capolinea l’avventura di Windows XP. Quel giorno, infatti, Microsoft rilascerà gli ultimi aggiornamenti per il sistema operativo più longevo della sua storia (ha esordito sul mercato nell’estate del 2001), quello con cui hanno imparato a familiarizzare decine di milioni di utenti nel mondo. A comunicarlo lo stesso colosso informatico di Redmond con un messaggio stringato ma quantomai eloquente: “Ora è il momento di passare ad un più moderno sistema operativo Windows e modernizzare l’infrastruttura IT”. Tradotto: fine dell’avventura, XP va in pensione.

La scelta è ufficialmente legata alla policy di Microsoft sul ciclo di vita del supporto, creata grazie ai suggerimenti degli utenti e inaugurata nel 2002, secondo cui tutti i prodotti ricevono aggiornamenti puntuali per minimo dieci anni, dopodiché non viene più assicurata la risoluzione degli errori; proprio quello che sta accadendo per XP.  Anche se qualcuno maligna che l’abbandono del sistema operativo sia dettato da una ragione commerciale: porre fine alla forte resistenza che la maggior parte degli utenti ha nel passare ai nuovi sistemi operativi di casa Microsoft e rilanciare le vendite degli applicativi. Perché, nonostante ben tre differenti prodotti (Vista, 7 e 8) abbiano tentato di raccogliere la pesante eredità di XP, il sistema più vecchio dei quattro risulta ancora installato su un terzo dei computer del mondo. Secondo le recenti statistiche, infatti, Windows XP è presente sul 30% delle macchine, superato solo da Windows7 (al 47%) ma di gran lunga preferito rispetto a Vista (che non supera quota 5%) e al recente Windows 8 (ancora fermo al 7%).

Dietro una scelta assolutamente legittima si aprono anche altri scenari. Primo su tutti quello relativo alla sicurezza. Nell’ultimo anno, da quando è arrivata l’ufficialità dell’abbandono di XP, esperti ed analisti hanno tentato più volte di lanciare l’allarme, richiamando l’attenzione sulle conseguenze (e soprattutto sui rischi) della fine del supporto.

Il prossimo 8 aprile sarà online l’ultimo pacchetto di aggiornamenti per la produttività e la sicurezza destinati a Windows XP (e, contemporaneamente, a Office 2003). Da quel giorno Microsoft non fornirà più alcuna patch di correzione né assistenza tecnica e i computer che continueranno a connettersi in rete saranno ogni giorno più esposti ad attacchi di virus, spyware e malware che potranno così creare notevoli problemi di funzionamento del PC, se non proprio rubare informazioni private. Anche se i veri problemi dovrebbero arrivare solamente trenta giorni dopo, durante il ‘patch-day’ di maggio (il primo che escluderà XP). Inoltre, gradualmente, pure i fornitori di software, hardware e accessori smetteranno di supportare i loro prodotti su XP non rilasciando più aggiornamenti e driver. Contribuendo a creare condizioni di lavoro sempre meno sicure.

Also, gradually , also suppliers of software, hardware and accessories will stop supporting their products on XP not releasing more drivers and updates .
