“Songs from African and Mediterranean Skies” è il progetto scaturito dall’incontro di due musicisti provenienti da continenti diversi, Dudu Manhenga ed Enzo Favata, che nella loro carriera artistica hanno intrecciato la tradizione musicale del proprio paese con le musiche moderne come il soul e il jazz.
Melodia, energia e poliritmia, modern jazz e musica tradizionale danno luogo ad un sound molto coinvolgente, di particolare originalità e freschezza, tra le nuvole del Mediterraneo ed i cieli dalle mille sfumature dell’Africa.
La band è composta da sette artisti, cinque provenienti dallo Zimbabwe e due dalla Sardegna: Enzo Favata ai sassofoni con Marcello Peghin alle chitarre si inseriscono nel gruppo musicale che accompagna abitualmente Dudu Manhenga, composto dal batterista Blessing Muparutsa, dal pianista Nick Nare, il bassista Joshua Kwesha e il percussionista Othnell Moyo.

Il concerto a Carbonia è organizzato dall’Associazione Jana Project, in collaborazione con il Comune di Carbonia e la Regione Autonoma della Sardegna.

DUDU MANHENGA è un’autentica leggenda dello Zimbabwe. E’ considerata l’erede di Miriam Makeba (Mama Afrika). Cantante e compositrice, il suo stile fa scivolare la musica tradizionale del suo paese verso l’afro-jazz, attraverso le sonorità della band e il caratteristico suono della Mbira, il tradizionale pianoforte a pollice africano.
L’artista africana è conosciuta anche in Italia, dove ha tenuto una serie di tournées negli anni scorsi. Ha cantato per Papa Benedetto XVI, durante il VII Incontro Mondiale delle Famiglie, in rappresentanza del Continente Africano.
Dudu Manhenga inizia a muovere i primi passi giovanissima come cantante di jazz e gospel nella città natale di Makokoba per poi trasferirsi ad Harare dove inizia la carriera di cantante e corista al fianco di vere e proprie leggende della musica africana. Parallelamente studia allo Zimbabwe College of Music in Harare. Dopo una gavetta come corista, nel 2001 fonda con il marito e batterista Blessing Muparutsa i “Color Blue”, band che riesce a sposare in maniera originale e coinvolgente la musica afro, il contemporary jazz e la musica tradizionale dello Zimbabwe. Nel 2003, a ventidue anni, pubblica il primo album, “On of the Blue”, miscela di afro jazz decisamente originale.

Oggi, in Zimbabwe, Dudu Manhenga, è conosciuta non solo per la sua musica, ma anche per l’attivismo per i diritti delle donne. In prima fila nell’AWIPAZ (Association for Women in Performing Arts in Zimbabwe) e nel FLAME (Female Literary Arts Music Enterprise) è stata recentemente nominata membro consigliere nel Ministero dell’educazione, sport, arti e culture del National Arts Council dello Zimbabwe e Ambasciatrice della Croce Rossa. “A differenza di altre cantanti africane, che dopo il successo si sono trasferite a Parigi o Londra, io oggi vivo ancora nel mio Zimbabwe, è la mia terra, le mie radici sono qui, e c’è ancora molto da fare per le donne, soprattutto contro la violenza domestica”“Songs from African and Mediterranean Skies”

“Songs from African and Mediterranean Skies” is the project resulted from the meeting of two musicians from different continents, Dudu Manhenga and Enzo Favata, who in their artistic careers have intertwined the traditional music of his country with modern music such as soul and jazz.
Melody, energy and polyrhythm, modern jazz and traditional music give rise to a sound very engaging, particularly originality and freshness, the clouds and the skies of the Mediterranean with a thousand shades of Africa.
The band is composed of seven artists, five from Zimbabwe and two from Sardinia, Enzo Favata saxophones with Marcello Peghin guitars are part of the musical group that usually accompanies Dudu Manhenga, composed by drummer Blessing Muparutsa, pianist Nick Nare, bassist Joshua Kwesha and percussionist Othnell Moyo.

The concert is organized by Jana Carbonia Project, in collaboration with the Municipality of Carbonia and the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.

DUDU Manhenga is a true legend of Zimbabwe. E ‘considered the heir of Miriam Makeba (Mama Afrika). After an apprenticeship as a backing vocalist, in 2001 she founded with her husband and drummer Blessing Muparutsa the “Color Blue”, a band that manages to marry in an original and engaging afro music, contemporary jazz and the traditional music of Zimbabwe. In 2003, at twenty-two, he published his first album, “On of the Blue”, a mixture of African jazz decidedly original.

Today, in Zimbabwe, Dudu Manhenga, is known not only for his music but also for activism for women’s rights.
