The Camera’s Blind Spot indaga le relazioni fra scultura e fotografia attraverso il punto di vista di un gruppo composito di artisti europei e statunitensi nati negli anni Settanta. Il termine “Blind spot” definisce la parte oscurata del campo visivo, il punto cieco del nostro sguardo.

Oltre ai più recenti sviluppi della formula canonica, in cui la fotografia documenta, rivisita e ricrea opere tridimensionali già esistenti (formula nata con la fotografia stessa e che ha conosciuto una straordinaria svolta creativa quando scultori come Medardo Rosso e Costantin Brancusi, al principio del XX secolo, hanno iniziato a fotografare le loro stesse opere in condizioni mutevoli di luce e di spazio), la mostra ambisce a dare conto di altre possibilità oggi non meno importanti, in particolare quella in cui la materialità dell’immagine fotografica è spinta a tal punto da diventare essa stessa scultura. Una sfida a ciò che, sino dalle origini della tecnica fotografica, ne costituisce il limite maggiore, l’impossibilità di restituire su una superficie piana un oggetto tridimensionale.

In mostra non saranno quindi presentate soltanto stampe fotografiche, ma anche e soprattutto altre opere – video, installazioni, sculture realizzate con carta fotografica o “zavorrate” da altri materiali, come legno, metallo, cemento – tutte ambiguamente sospese fra seconda e terza dimensione.

The Camera’s Blind Spot investigates the relationship between sculpture and photography through the point of view of a composite group of European and American artists born in the seventies. The term “blind spot” defines the shaded part of the visual field, the blind spot of our gaze.

In addition to the latest developments in the canonical formula, in which the photograph documents, revisits and recreates three-dimensional works that already exist (formula established with the photograph itself and which has experienced an extraordinary creative breakthrough when sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Medardo Rosso, at the beginning of the twentieth century, they began to take pictures of their own works under changing conditions of light and space), the exhibition aims to provide an account of other possibilities are no less important today, especially one in which the materiality of the photographic image is pushed to the point by itself become sculpture. A challenge to what, until the origins of photographic technique, is its major limitation, the inability to repay on a flat surface a three-dimensional object.

The exhibition will therefore not be submitted only prints, but also other works – video, installations, sculptures made of photo paper or “weighed down” by other materials, such as wood, metal, concrete – all ambiguously suspended between the second and third dimensions.
