TORMENTO Erano gli inizi degli anni novanta e il Rap Italiano era agli esordi. I Sottotono, fin dal loro primo brano “La Mia Coccinella”, si sono subito imposti all’attenzione del grande pubblico occupando un importante spazio nelle programmazioni radiofoniche. In poco tempo approdano in televisione e numerose sono le partecipazione nei più importanti programmi televisivi e non. Nel 1997 vincono il Premio Rivelazione al Festivalbar con il brano “Dimmi di Sbagliato che c’è” e nello stesso anno raggiungono il doppio disco di Platino con il loro secondo album “Sotto Effetto Stono” (Wea/Warner Music). Era solo l’inizio! Questo giovane duo è riuscito a portare l’Hip Hop nelle più importanti manifestazioni musicali e nei più popolari “salotti televisivi”, dal concerto del I Maggio a Roma a Domenica In, per approdare nel 2001 al palco del Festival di Sanremo. Dopo aver venduto quasi mezzo milione di copie, con quattro album e un best all’attivo, Tormento e Fish decidono di intraprendere percorsi musicali tra loro differenti. Tormento ha voglia di dare ancora più profondità e spessore alla sua ricerca andando a scavare nella musica Soul, da sempre strettamente legata al mondo Hip Hop. L’amore per Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield ma anche Al Green o i Parliament lo spinge sempre di più alla ricerca di musicisti che abbiano la sua stessa passione. Infatti, per il suo primo album solista, “Il Mio Diario” (SubSideRec/Universal Music), Tormento si avvale dell’aiuto di personaggi del calibro di Fabio “Sir” Merigo (BlueBeaters), Prince Melody (Casino Royale), Madasky (Africa Unite) e altri amanti del Soul quali Kboard (Pooglia Tribe) e il king Al Castellana accompagnato dal suo team SoulCombo. I singoli estratti “Mi Piaci” e “Solo Tu” sono tra i primi esempi di Nu Soul Italiano avvicinando così la nostra nazione ad un genere che all’estero viene già considerato all’avanguardia. Durante lo show-case di presentazione de “Il Mio Diario”, Tormento conosce Mimmo D’Alessandro che rimane colpito proprio dalla chiara ispirazione Soul che si respira nel concerto. Da qui nasce il sodalizio artistico con la D’Alessandro e Galli e grazie a loro Tormento entra in contatto con il produttore artistico Michael Baker (Batterista di artisti quali Whitney Houston e più recentemente Giorgia). L’affiatamento è immediato e nei due nasce da subito la voglia di chiudersi in studio per produrre quello che sarà.. …Il nuovo album di Tormento, “ALIBI”. La radice rimane la stessa, il Soul! Melodie profonde e liriche ricercate, senza per questo perdere la freschezza e l’immediatezza dell’Hip Hop. In questo album si respira la voglia di raccontare questi tempi, così contraddittori, che stiamo vivendo e che ci vedono “quasi costretti” ad affrontare problematiche ormai globali. Il tema centrale del progetto viene sviluppato proprio nella title track “Alibi”, in cui Tormento ci tiene a sottolineare che i problemi che viviamo oggi riguardano tutti. E’ quindi inutile cercare di crearsi alibi. Oggi, infatti, ognuno di noi è chiamato ad una crescita non indifferente. Viviamo tempi in cui i popoli e le loro culture si stanno incontrando come mai prima d’ora. Per questo motivo Tormento e Michael Baker si avvalgono di un team internazionale di musicisti. “Alibi” vanta la collaborazione di un cast d’eccezione. Il tastierista/arrangiatore Tommy Barbarella e il bassista Sonny T (Prince & The New Power Generation), il percussionista Bashiri Johnson e ospiti del calibro di Roberta Granà e il sassofonista Rosario Giuliani. Accompagnato sempre, chiaramente, dai vecchi amici Al Castellana, Prince Melody e Sir Merigo. Insomma, la voglia è di ridisegnare i confini della Musica Italiana. Senza snaturare la nostra cultura e ricercando nuova ispirazione dal Soul, la musica dell’anima.

Nel 2008 nasce il progetto Siamesi Brothers in collaborazione con Esa che oltre ad essere il fratello di Tormento ha fatto parte di gruppi storici dell’Hip Hop Italiano come O.T.R. e Gente Guasta. Per la prima volta insieme Tormento e Esa realizzano un album di 17 tracce che racchiude i principi classici dell’Hip Hop ma si propone di aprire nuove strade musicali e soprattutto nuove tematiche. Tantissimi gli ospiti di questo progetto tra cui Gué (Club Dogo), Primo (Corveleno), Dre Love, Dj Myke, Night Skinny, Inoki

Tormento inizia a dedicarsi alle nuove opportunità che il web offre alla musica. Per la prima volta rende disponibile in free-download uno Street Album firmato Yoshi, dal titolo “Rabbia”. Il successo è incredibile in pochi mesi il sito riceve un milione di visite e 350mila persone scaricano “Rabbia – The Street Album”. Da questo primo successo sul web tutto il lavoro di Tormento si concentra sul sito www.Tormento.it che si trasforma in un piccolo portale di informazioni riguardanti il Soul e l’Hip Hop oltre ad offrire tantissima musica in free-download.

In un’era in cui la musica e le informazioni viaggiano sul web. Tormento si propone di essere all’avanguardia ancora oggi, così come lo era la sua prima etichetta discografica Area Cronica. Dopo 15 anni di carriera la rivoluzione musicale che Tormento porta avanti è ancora viva, almeno finché generi come l’Hip Hop e il Soul non avranno, in Italia, l’importanza e il rilievo che meritano.

TORMENT was the beginning of the nineties and the Italian Rap was in its infancy. The Velvet Underground, from their first song “My Ladybug”, you are immediately imposed the attention of the general public occupying an important space in radio programming.
