La Sartiglia è un gioco equestre di antiche origini: pare siano stati i Crociati ad introdurla in Occidente, fra il 1118 e il 1200.
È dunque probabile l’origine saracena della giostra che è poi una corsa equestre all’anello, sospeso sul percorso all’altezza di un uomo a cavallo.

Il cavaliere della Sartiglia deve infilzare una stella metallica con la lancia o con la spada: questo genere di sfide ebbe ampia diffusione e successo in Spagna dove i giovani del luogo competevano con i cavalieri moreschi. Del resto, il nome stesso di Sartiglia deriva dal catalano Sortilla che a sua volta deriva dal latino sorticula che significa anello oltre ad essere il diminutivo di sors (fortuna). Alla tradizione iberica rimanda il nome di colui che è il capo supremo della corsa su Cumpoidori da componedor, il maestro di campo della sortija spagnola.

L’evoluzione della Sartiglia segue l’andamento della storia con la trasformazione delle strutture feudo-cavalleresche. La Sartiglia, da espressione del folklore delle classi nobili e dei gruppi di potere, assunse popolarità anche in ambito borghese e popolare. Per la tradizione fu un canonico ad istituire una donazione appannaggio del Gremio dei Contadini per il mantenimento della Sartiglia, così da foraggiare il ricco pranzo da offrire ai cavalieri che partecipavano alla Giostra. Ed ancora oggi il Gremio usufruisce del lascito (su Cungiau de sa Sartiglia) per il sostentamento della Giostra che la domenica si corre sotto la protezione di San Giovanni Battista, mentre il martedì spetta al Gremio dei Falegnami organizzare l’evento che è sotto la protezione di San Giuseppe.

La Sartiglia è una festa magica: di colori, di simboli, di metafore, dove bravura e cultura si fondono muovendosi fra sacro e profano, in un’affascinante miscela di valori e nell’auspicio che la primavera imminente e i raccolti ormai prossimi rivelino ancora una volta la generosa prosperità dei campi e delle messi.

L’ultima domenica e il martedì di Carnevale, ogni anno, Oristano attira a sé l’intera Sardegna. La giostra è vissuta con una profondità emotiva indescrivibile che in pratica dura tutto l’anno, specie negli ambienti che lavorano nel retroscena: i Gremi, le associazioni, gli enti, le scuderie e le famiglie dei cavalieri che partecipano alla corsa. Tutto ciò non passa inosservato ed il clima della festa trascina tutti e incanta, anche perché nelle ore che precedono la corsa le strade della città risuonano degli squilli e del battito di trombettieri e tamburini.

La corsa ha da svolgersi, piova o splenda il sole. Il regista della Sartiglia è su Componidori. Sono i due Gremi a scegliere e selezionare chi, tra tanti aspiranti, vestirà i panni del capo corsa ed indosserà una fascinosa maschera androgina. La vestizione è un rito mitico.

È lui il Signore della Festa, uomo e donna al tempo stesso, né femmina né maschio. C’è un antico rituale rispettato che raggiunge il suo culmine nella vestizione del capo corsa, il giorno della gara.

Un rito denso di sacralità: il cavaliere è vestito su un tavolo, un vero e proprio altare abbellito da fiori e segni della festa, allestito con cura dall’Oberaju Majori e da quanti collaborano col Gremio. Abbondano grano e addobbi floreali. Si mesce vernaccia. Si offrono i dolci della tradizione mentre ogni passaggio della cerimonia è scandito secondo un rituale rigoroso.

Vestito, monta a cavallo il re della Sartiglia: non dovrà toccare terra sino alla fine della giornata e sino all’avvenuta svestizione. Ad abbigliare il Cavaliere ci pensano le Massaieddas, fanciulle in costume guidate dall’esperta Massaia manna. Al capo corsa non è neppure consentito toccare gli abiti. È una vera funzione, un rito lungo seguito in silenzio.

Al termine della vestizione, su Componidori varcherà la soglia a cavallo e con in capo un cilindro nero, la mantiglia, una camicia ricca di sbuffi e pizzi, il gilet, l’ampia cintura in pelle ed appunto la maschera che incornicia il viso grazie ad una fasciatura di seta. Reca in mano sa pippia de maju, un fascio di pervinca avvolto in panno verde su cui è innestato un doppio mazzo di viole, simbolo di primaverile fecondità: gli servirà per benedire la folla e i cavalieri, tracciando nell’aria il segno cristiano.

Assistono il capo corsa su Segundu e su Terzu Cumpoi che gli sono affianco nel corteo che muove verso il percorso della giostra fino a raggiungere Sa Sea Manna (Via Duomo) dove è sospesa la stella. Il capo corsa vi passa sotto tre volte, incrociando la spada con il suo aiutante di campo. A su Componidori l’onore di aprire la corsa alla stella. Poi toccherà ai suoi vice e infine a quanti riceveranno dal capo corsa la spada. La tradizione vuole che dal numero delle stelle infilate derivi un presagio sul raccolto. Poi l’ultima corsa alla stella, questa volta con su stoccu, un’asta di legno lavorato. Prima delle audaci Pariglie che si correranno fino al tramonto nella vicina Via Mazzini, su Componidori dovrà cimentarsi in sa remada. Disteso di schiena sul dorso del cavallo, il sovrano della Sartiglia percorrerà al galoppo la pista, benedicendo la folla.

Solo allora la Sartiglia potrà essere dichiarata conclusa e il rito celebrato in quell’anno definitivamente consegnato alla storia e alla memoria dell’intera Città.

Domenica 2 Marzo – Sartiglia del Gremio dei Contadini
ORE 10 – BANDO
Di primo mattino, il gruppo dei tamburini e dei trombettieri partendo dalla piazza Eleonora d’Arborea, davanti al Palazzo del Comune, scorta un araldo a cavallo che nelle vie del centro storico, da lettura del Bando della Sartiglia, invitando il popolo ad assistere alla giostra equestre.

ORE 11 – ANNULLO POSTALE
Apertura Ufficio Postale con Annullo Postale Speciale nella Sede della Fondazione. Uno sportello filatelico straordinario, a cura di Poste Italiane, annullerà tutta la corrispondenza con gli annulli figurati speciali predisposti per celebrare la Sartiglia. Inoltre sarà predisposto un Folder filatelico che conterrà le cartoline affrancate e annullate e i dati salienti della Sartiglia.

ORE 12 – VESTIZIONE
Vestizione de su Componidori nella sede del Gremio dei Contadini in via Aristana.

La mattina della corsa, su Componidori (il capocorsa), dopo la visita alle scuderie per salutare gli amici e cavalieri, si reca presso la casa del presidente del gremio da dove verso le 11 parte il corteo verso la sede dove avverrà la Vestizione. Il gruppo dei tamburini e trombettieri, apre il corteo composto da is massaieddas e da sa massaia manna, che portano con dei cestini gli abiti per la vestizione de su Componidori, seguono i componenti del gremio, che custodiscono le spade e gli stocchi per la corsa e su Componidori. Terminata la vestizione, dal tavolo dove è stato vestito, su Componidori monta sul cavallo. In quel momento il presidente del gremio gli consegna sa Pippia de Maiu con la quale saluta, cn segni di benedizione, il presidente del gremio e tutti i presenti. Su Componidori si porta quindi verso l’uscita e riverso sul cavallo esce dalla sede del gremio.

ORE 13,15 – CORTEO
Al termine della cerimonia della Vestizione, il corteo dei 120 cavalieri guidato da su Componidori e preceduto dai trombettieri e tamburini, massaieddas e dal gremio, si dirige verso il percorso di via Duomo nel quale si svolgerà la Corsa alla Stella.

ORE 13,30 circa – CORSA ALLA STELLA
Con il triplice incrocio di spade tra su Componidori e il suo secondo che si svolge sotto il nastro verde che sostiene la stella, al ritmo dei tamburi, ha inizio la corsa.
La prima discesa spetta a su Componidori, a seguire i sui compagni di pariglia, la pariglia de su componidori della Sartiglia del martedì e tutti i cavalieri a cui concederà l’onore della spada.
Seguiranno le discese con lo stocco e sa Remada.
Da quel momento si ricompone il corteo dei cavalieri che ripercorrendo la via Duomo e passando dal corso Umberto e dalla piazza Roma, si dirige verso la via Mazzini, teatro dove si svolgeranno le Pariglie.

ORE 16,30 circa – CORSA DELLE PARIGLIE
Da Su Brocci”, il piccolo tunnel che si immette nella via Mazzini, prendono il via le spericolate acrobazie dei cavalieri. Su questo percorso, secondo l’ordine di sfilata, tutte le pariglie partecipanti potranno cimentarsi nelle evoluzioni. Apre e chiude la corsa delle Pariglie la pariglia de su Componidori.

ORE 18,30 – SVESTIZIONE
Svestizione de su Componidori nella sede del Gremio dei Contadini.

Al termine della corsa delle pariglie il corteo si ricompone e ritorna sul percorso della via Mazzini. Ormai all’imbrunire, la sfilata dei cavalli e dei cavalieri segna la fine della corsa. Al termine della sfilata il corteo formato dai trombettieri, dai tamburini, dal gremio e dai cavalieri, si dirige alla volta della sede del gremio dove è avvenuta la vestizione de su Componidori per procedere con la Svestizione. Levati il cilindro e il velo, lo straordinario rullo dei tamburi segna il momento in cui viene tolta la maschera. Da quel momento il gremio, i cavalieri e tutti i presenti si recano da lui per salutarlo e congratularsi.

Il costo dei biglietti va dai 30 ai 10 euro per la corsa alla stella e dai 25 ai 20 euro per la corsa delle pariglie di domenica 2 marzo; mentre la corsa della stella di martedi costa appena 10 euro.
