First photographer in 1949, to become a member of Magnum Photos, Werner Bischof was coupled documentary observation of reality, the need not to manipulate the look on events, a lyrical vision, almost intimate, every situation and every person with whom was found to operate. How many times had occasion to say, he felt more artist than a photojournalist. And not many like him, in fact, were able to condense in a few but intense years of photographic and artistic, so precise observation and deep, conscious and totally original. Rejecting the “superficiality and sensationalism” of magazines, devoted much of his life to the study of traditional cultures, often overlooked area that allowed him to keep his distance from publishers eager only of material to cover. He traveled all over the world making it exceptional reportage social, reaching countries such as Japan, Indochina, Korea, India – where, in 1951, Life Magazine, created the famous series devoted to the famine – and yet, Mexico, Hong Kong, Panama and Peru, where he lost his life at just 38 years old. The images of those reports, appeared in the leading journals and on the most important international magazines, are visible for the first time in Sardinia thanks to the exhibition at MAN Museum in Nuoro.

Important aspect of the exhibition of Nuoro is the presence of an entire section devoted to shots WERNER BISCHOF realized in Sardinia in 1950, some of which are presented in FIRST WORLD.

Bischof was sent to the island from period to document the poor working conditions of farmers and miners Campidano Iglesiente. His report is characterized by total immersion in the context. The seriousness of the issues that led to Expressionism many of his fellow photojournalist, was an opportunity for him to grasp the less dramatic side of the facts and people. Result arrived at by using the stylistic solution of the “slightly out of focus”, capable of restoring an original freshness of events. The photos taken in Sardinia, to meet a certain amount of formal research, find a balance between aesthetics and objective rigor in the care of the balance of images: high cut, centered shots, close-ups and drugs with lowered lights in relief. The mastery of technique allowed him to choose the best moment of a “unique”. His humanity is enhanced by the choice of subjects: there is the daily life of a people rather than a land, there Sardinia people more abstract idea of a race or a ground offensive. And with the lightness of a smile on their faces, he was able to transcend the horrors and devastation caused by the war.
