La leggenda narra :

Secondo la tradizione irlandese, in Irlanda non ci sarebbero più serpenti da quando San Patrizio li cacciò in mare.
Questa leggenda è connessa a quella della montagna sacra irlandese, Croagh Patrick, sulla quale il santo avrebbe trascorso quaranta giorni, gettando alla fine una campana dalla sommità del monte nell’attuale Baia di Clew per scacciare i serpenti e le impurità, formando le isole che la contraddistinguono.
Celebre anche la leggenda del pozzo di San Patrizio, il pozzo senza fondo, da cui si aprivano le porte del Purgatorio. Da notare la presenza della leggendaria figura di San Patrizio anche nell’emblema nazionale irlandese, il trifoglio (shamrock). Grazie ad un trifoglio, si racconta infatti, San Patrizio avrebbe spiegato agli irlandesi il concetto cristiano della Trinità, prendendo come esempio le tre foglie collegate ad un unico stelo.

The legend says:

According to Irish tradition, in Ireland there would be no more snakes since St. Patrick drove them into the sea.
This legend is related to that of Irish holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, on which the saint would spend forty days, throwing the end of a bell from the top of the mountain in Clew Bay to chase away snakes and impurities, forming islands distinguish.
The legend of the famous well of St. Patrick, the bottomless pit, from which you opened the doors of Purgatory. Note the presence of the legendary figure of St. Patrick also in the national Irish clover (shamrock). Thanks to a clover, it is said, would explain the Irish St. Patrick’s Day the Christian concept of the Trinity, taking as an example the three leaves attached to a single stem.
