Un ponte di musica tra Cagliari e Londra, attraverso il quale far nascere e circolare progetti e collaborazioni tra artisti italiani e inglesi. Si presenta così My Jazz Islands, il festival che debutta questo mese nel capoluogo sardo per vivere poi a novembre la sua seconda parte a Londra.

L’idea è della cantante jazz, autrice e regista teatrale Filomena Campus: “Anni fa lasciai la mia isola per un’altra isola, che mi accolse e mi aiutò a realizzare tanti sogni”, spiega nelle sue note di presentazione del festival l’artista sarda trapiantata nella metropoli inglese nel 2001. “Ora è tempo di costruire un ponte tra le due isole e terre antiche, in particolare tra due città, una ricca di mare, sole e ritmo, l’altra crocevia di culture diverse: Cagliari e Londra.”

Con la firma di Theatralia (l’avatar teatrale della Campus) e la complicità di Nicola Spiga con la cooperativa Forma e Poesia nel Jazz, di Ross Dines del Jazz Club Soho di Londra, e dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura della capitale inglese, My Jazz Islands esordisce dunque con tre serate in programma a Cagliari il 20, 21 e 22 giugno negli spazi all’aperto del Lazzaretto, il centro d’arte e cultura nel quartiere Sant’Elia. Un trittico di concerti doverosamente dedicato a Franca Rame, la grande attrice recentemente scomparsa, maestra e ispiratrice di vari lavori di Filomena Campus (che ha anche curato diverse regie di suoi testi in Inghilterra).

Due grandi improvvisatori al centro dei riflettori per l’appuntamento inaugurale di giovedì 20 (ore 22.30): il pianista e fisarmonicista sardo Antonello Salis, uno dei musicisti più originali e internazionalmente apprezzati del jazz “made in Italy”, e l’inglese Orphy Robinson; un vibrafonista eclettico, attivo in un ampio ventaglio di generi, come dimostrano le collaborazioni con nomi come Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, David Murray, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masekela, Louis Moholo, Nana Vasconcelos, Evan Parker, Butch Morris, ma anche con gli ex Soft Machine Robert Wyatt e Hugh Hopper e il batterista dei Pink Floyd Nick Mason.

Jazz e teatro si incrociano la sera dopo (venerdì 21, con inizio alle 21) in “Jester of Jazz” (ovvero “Giullare del Jazz”), un progetto di Filomena Campus che ha debuttato nel 2010: un raffinato mix di jazz contaminato da surreali invasioni felliniane attraverso brevi testi di Stefano Benni, Franca Rame, Maria Carta e altri autori. Accompagnano la cantante sarda i membri del suo quartetto tutto british – il pianista Steve Lodder, Dudley Phillips al contrabbasso e Martin France alla batteria – più Antonello Salis ospite speciale.

Musica e teatro caratterizzano anche il gran finale di sabato 22 (sempre alle 21): “Italy VS England”, lo spettacolo che ha ispirato il tema dell’intera rassegna e che ha per protagonisti Stefano Benni (autore di tutti i testi, eccezion fatta per un brano di Shakespeare e uno di Eliot) e ancora il quartetto di Filomena Campus (sua anche la regia). Sviluppando un’idea dello scrittore bolognese, nata in occasione di un concerto al festival jazz di Roccella Jonica del 2008 (a sua volta basato in gran parte su “Misterioso”, lo spettacolo dal quale era nata due anni prima la collaborazione fra Benni e la Campus), “Italy VS England” vede impegnati in vari momenti i musicisti anche come attori; in particolare Orphy Robinson, special guest in questa occasione, che sarà chiamato a recitare una parte in italiano con lo stesso Benni.

Oltre ai concerti, My Jazz Islands proporrà vari appuntamenti collaterali, come i video allestimenti realizzati da Marco Benevole, degustazioni di prodotti “bio” (in collaborazione con la Coldiretti Cagliari), e la presentazione di “L’Italia degli altri”, il nuovo libro di Mario Fortunato, critico letterario del settimanale “L’Espresso”, che racconta il nostro Paese visto dagli stranieri.

Lunedì 3 comincia la prevendita di biglietti e abbonamenti presso il Box Office di Cagliari, in viale Regina Margherita, 43 (tel. 070657428). Ingresso a 15 euro per i concerti del 20 e 21; costa invece 20 euro il biglietto per “Italy VS England”. 35 il prezzo dell’abbonamento per le tre serate.

Il cartellone completo del festival verrà illustrato nel corso di una conferenza stampa prevista per il 19 giugno a Cagliari; tra i partecipanti, Ross Dines, manager e direttore artistico del Pizza Express Jazz Club di Londra, dove dall’11 al 13 novembre è in programma la “tranche” inglese del festival, impreziosita dalla presenza di Paolo Fresu. Il trombettista sardo sarà ospite (insieme al percussionista brasiliano Adriano Adewale) del progetto “Duos” di Filomena Campus e Giorgio Serci (in calendario l’11), e di “Jester of Jazz” (il 12). Completa il trittico di serate londinesi il “ritorno” di “Italy VS England” (il 13 novembre) con Stefano Benni e il quartetto di Filomena Campus che ospitano stavolta il cantante Cleveland Watkiss.

La prima edizione di My Jazz Islands, nuovo progetto di qualità targato Forma e Poesia nel Jazz, è organizzata a Cagliari con il contributo della Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (Assessorato della Pubblica Istruzione, Sport e Spettacolo e Assessorato del Turismo) e della Provincia di Cagliari. Per la parte londinese, l’organizzazione è invece di Filomena Campus in collaborazione con il Jazz Club Soho Pizza Express e con il contributo dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Londra.

By signing Theatralia (the avatar theatrical Campus) and the complicity of Nicola Spiga with the cooperative Form and Poetry in Jazz, Ross Dines’s Jazz Club Soho in London, and the Italian Cultural Institute of the English capital, My Jazz Islands begins therefore with three evenings held in Cagliari on 20, 21 and 22 June in open areas of the Lazaretto, the center of art and culture in the district Sant’Elia. A triptych of concerts dedicated to dutifully Franca Rame, the great actress who recently passed away, a teacher and inspirer of various works of Filomena Campus (who also edited several of his royal texts in England).

Two great improvisers in the spotlight for the inaugural meeting of Thursday 20 (22.30): the Sardinian pianist and accordionist Antonello Salis, one of the most original musicians and internationally appreciated jazz “made in Italy” and the English Orphy Robinson , a vibraphonist eclectic, active in a wide range of genres, as evidenced by collaborations with names such as Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, David Murray, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Hugh Masekela, Louis Moholo, Nana Vasconcelos, Evan Parker, Butch Morris, but also with former Soft Machine’s Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

Jazz and theater intersect the next night (Friday 21, beginning at 21) in “Jester of Jazz” (or “Jester of Jazz”), a project of Filomena Campus which debuted in 2010, a refined mix of jazz contaminated by invasions surreal Fellini through short texts by Stefano Benni, Franca Rame, Maria Carta and other authors. In addition to concerts, My Jazz Islands propose various side events, such as video installations realized by Marco Benevole, local products “organic” (in collaboration with Coldiretti Cagliari), and the presentation of “Italy of others,” the new book by Mario Fortunato, literary critic for the weekly “L’Espresso” which tells our country seen by foreigners.
