Lunedì 30 settembre alle ore 11:00 a San Basilio (CA) in località Pranu Sanguni sarà inaugurato il Sardinia Radio Telescope. Realizzato sotto il patrocinio del MIUR, dell’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) e della Regione Sardegna, il Sardinia Radio Telescope sarà il più grande radiotelescopio in Europa e il secondo al mondo.

Ideato per applicazioni di radioastronomia, geodinamica e scienze spaziali, il Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) è un radiotelescopio con specchio primario di 64 metri, con diverse posizioni focali e una copertura di frequenza da 0,3 a 100 GHz.

SRT, che è il più grande radiotelescopio in Europa e il secondo al mondo, si trova a circa 35 km da Cagliari in località Pranu Sanguni (comune di San Basilio).

Il radiotelescopio è costruito con una tecnologia avanzatissima che lo rende uno dei più evoluti e potenti strumenti del mondo per lo studio delle emissioni radio provenienti dai corpi celesti e per applicazioni di geodinamica e di scienze spaziali. Potrà essere utilizzato sia come antenna singola, sia in rete con altri radiotelescopi italiani ed europei.

L’impianto è stato finanziato principalmente dal MIUR, dall’ASI e dalla Regione Sardegna e sarà utilizzato sia per studiare le sorgenti radio dell’Universo sia per operare come stazione ricevente di Terra per le sonde interplanetarie.

Il progetto SRT si inquadra in un ampio programma di sviluppo scientifico, tecnologico e di alta formazione in Sardegna e si configura come una facility internazionale di altissimo profilo.

Designed for radio astronomy applications, geodynamics, and space sciences, the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) is a radio telescope with a primary mirror of 64 meters, with different focal positions and a frequency coverage from 0.3 to 100 GHz

SRT, which is the largest radio telescope in Europe and second in the world, is located about 35 km from Cagliari in the locality Pranu Sanguni (municipality of San Basilio).

The telescope is built with advanced technology which makes it one of the most advanced and powerful tools in the world for the study of radio emissions from celestial bodies and applications for geodynamics and space sciences. It can be used either as a single antenna, and network with other Italian and European radio telescopes.

The system was mainly financed by MIUR, ASI and by the Sardinia Region and will be used both to study the radio sources of the Universe is to operate as a receiving station to Earth for interplanetary probes.

The SRT project is part of a broad program of scientific, technological and higher education in Sardinia and is configured as a high-profile international facility.
