L’avaro è Arpagone, ma gli altri, cosa sono gli altri? Quale spazio è concesso all’alterità in questa casa corridoio dove tutto è ansiosamente osservato dal suo padre padrone? Tre sono i figli di Arpagone: Cleante, Elisa e la cassetta, ma solo l’ultima è stata “partorita” da lui stesso. Gli altri sono i figli di una madre morta, figli nemici vissuti come sottrattori di giovinezza ed amore, ancor prima che di denari.

Mariana, la ragazza che si fa comprare dal vecchio avaro, per intermediazione della ruffiana Frosina, è forse l’ultimo anelito di vitalità, la battaglia finale per dare scacco matto al mondo e alle leggi della natura. Pornografia senile in cui “l’eretto” deve essere solo lui, gli altri li si lascia prigionieri dei loro ruoli, costretti a fare la commedia, mentre lui allude e depista. Solo i servi, non prendendolo sul serio, potrebbero farlo fuori, e non è casuale che sia l’anarchico Saetta a rubargli la cassetta, ma essi però sono pur sempre servi. Insomma gli altri senza Arpagone non si sa bene di cosa possano parlare, di cosa occuparsi. È come l’abitudine, secondo la definizione di Samuel Beckett: il collare che tiene legato il cane al suo vomito. Tutti lo schifano, ma tutti ne sono legati, quasi al guinzaglio, e alla fine, quando l’operetta delle agnizioni li scioglie dal legame, loro, finalmente liberi dove andranno? I vari figli, commissario, ruffiana, futura sposa, cuoco e cocchiere, vecchio nobile napoletano, domestico travestito, di cosa riempiranno ora le loro giornate senza più questo sottrattore di vita? Adesso gli toccherà viverla la vita, diventando Arpagoni loro stessi o magari liberandosi del cappio dell’avere, del possedere, di quello che è oggi il nostro esistere.
