L’opera è ambientata nella sala da pranzo, adibita anche a studio di un piccolo appartamento francese. Il professore è in attesa di una nuova allieva, per impartirle delle lezioni di matematica, linguistica e filologia comparata, al fine di ottenere la libera docenza totale. La governante, una robusta donna di età tra i 40 e i 50 anni, si preoccupa della salute del professore e segue lo svolgimento delle lezioni. Mentre la lezione procede, carica di assurdo e di non-senso, nel professore va aumentando un senso di rabbia contro l’ignoranza dell’allieva, che al contrario di lui diventa sempre più silenziosa e mite.

“Esperimento di teatro astratto o al contrario concreto…poiché esso è solo ciò che si vede sulla scena, poiché nasce sul palcoscenico, poiché è gioco, gioco di parole, gioco di scene, di immagini, materializzazione di simboli. Bisogna riuscire a liberare la tensione drammatica senza l’aiuto di nessun intrigo di nessun oggetto particolare.
Si perverrà a rivelare qualcosa di mostruoso: il che peraltro appare necessario in quanto il teatro è essenzialmente rivelazione di cose mostruose, o di condizioni mostruose senza immagini, o di immagini che ci portiamo in noi”.

The play is set in the dining room, also used as a small studio apartment in France. The professor is waiting for a new pupil, to issue to the lessons of mathematics, linguistics and comparative philology in order to get the full professorship. The housekeeper, a stout woman between the ages of 40 and 50 years, is concerned about the health of the teacher and follows the course of lessons. As the lesson progresses, full of absurd and non-sense, the professor is increasing a sense of anger against ignorance pupil, who unlike him becomes more quiet and mild.

“Experiment theater abstract or concrete on the contrary … because it is only what you see on the stage, because the stage is born, it is game, word game, game scenes, images, materialization of symbols. Must be able to liberate the dramatic tension without the help of any intrigue of any particular object.
It will arrive to reveal something monstrous which also appears necessary because the theater is essentially revelation of monstrous things, or monstrous conditions without images or images that we carry within us. “
