KAREL MUSIC EXPO’ – CAGLIARI – 4 TO 6 OCTOBER

Meeting in Cagliari with the Karel Music Expo: October 4 to 6 reopens the annual showcase of independent music and copyright conceived and organized by the cooperative Vox Day After the summer experience of the past year, the festival returns therefore to the his usual place in early autumn and confirmation, in its sixth year, spaces and well-established in the previous formula, a base once again in the historic district of Castello.

Three evenings of music (but not only), seventeen proposals in the bill, between groups and soloists of national and international, not without a look at the local scene and previews and five / six sets for the evening, one after another, in succession alternating on two stages set up at the Civic Theatre Castle, home of the now customary KME, plus two episodes in the nearby (and beautiful) Hall of the Rectorate eighteenth century, in University.

In the program of this edition, with the theme “Black” opens a tetralogy on colors inspired by the cultures of the world, a wide selection of styles and trends from song writing – with artists such as Edda and Luca Gemma – the narrative to music with project “We miss Toto” that unites Stefano Benni and Fausto Mesolella, and the reading of Wu Ming 2 “Ethnicity partisan” the mix of neo-psychedelic rock and indie pop vintage of the Galactic Maya eclectic palette of sounds of Bologna violent (solo project of Nicholas Manzan), to that of Guano Padano, made up of suggestions morriconiane, desert rock, country, folk, jazz and blues cross. A variety that characterizes the proposals coming from abroad: the Germans Wareika, Icelanders Epic Rain, English Mr. Fogg and his famous compatriot, the great music producer Adrian Sherwood. The show is tinged then rose with the voices of Paola wrasse and Missincat (born Caterina Barbieri), while the scene is represented by the Sardinian solo projects of Cagliari and Sassari Henry Spanu BeeSide (Federico Pazzona), as well as dall’indie De Grinpipol rock, even their home in the capital Turritan.

Dedicated to independent music and copyright, with particular attention to quality content and innovation, Karel Music Expo has always promoted cultural exchange with the collaboration of its foreign partners, including Balcony TV (IRL), Network Europe ( the European network which includes operators of 13 countries) and Sonicbids (USA).

New this year is instead Award Akme ‘, a national award for the most innovative youth music project, which will be announced Sept. 29 at the Supersound of Faenza, during the evening dedicated to the MEI (Meeting of the independents) to the network of Festival . The jury, consisting of journalists and experts – Gianluigi Peccerillo (Site DLSO.it and sworn in the premium MEI), Luigi Prosperi (conductor of the transmission of Indiepatici Fusoradio, who was also on the jury plate young MEI), Federico River (l ‘ units, Rocksteria) and Giordano Sangiorgi (President Audiocoop) -, chose Iori’s Eyes, a young band from Milan, who will be awarded at the opening last night of the Karel Music Expo on Saturday, 6.

Thursday, October 4

We start, then, Thursday, October 4. The task of inaugurating the sixth edition of the window Cagliari on stage, “electric” Civic Theatre in Castle (at 21), it is for Luca Gemma (which he performed for the first time in Sardinia). The singer, guitarist and songwriter (among others, Fiorella Mannoia, Patrizia Laquidara, Bobo Rondelli, Malika Ayane), former voice of the folk-rock band Rossomaltese, has four albums to his name, the most recent is “supernatural”, released in January. A follow (but in the “room acoustics”) “The Heart & The Void”, the solo project of indie-folk Cagliari Henry Spanu: music with a minimalist approach and intimate live voice and guitar are the essential elements of the compositions.

Jazz, blues, surf, Tex-Mex, echoes of the East, the westerns of Sergio Leone and the soundtracks of Morricone is vast and rich nuances of the musical imagination of Guano Padano (they at the first exit in Sardinia) , training hard to label and place in this or that category of music. After the debut album of 2010, the trio of Danilo Gallo (bass), Alessandro “Asso” Stefana (guitar) and Zeno De Rossi (drums) has doubled in March with an album titled simply, “2”, but far-reaching.

Beeside (nee Federico Pazzona, Sassari, born in 1980) debuted this year on disk “Mood Spirals”, released on the independent label Seahorse. Voice and guitar at the service of a project that moves with freshness between songwriters and folk matrix English.

The fifth set sees the spotlight Stefano Benni and Fausto Mesolella together for a new project of music and poetry, “We miss Toto.” A live surreal where guitar Mesolella accompanying readings and vocal performances of the writer, here dealing with different texts and, at times, in the unusual role of singer, with a highly personal style halfway between rap, recited and melodic.

Closes the opening night Missincat, stage name of Catherine Barbieri, singer-songwriter grew up artistically in his hometown, Milan, before finding success in Berlin, where she moved five years ago and where he recorded his two albums, “Back On My Feet “in 2009 and” Wow “in 2011.

The spotlight of the Civic Theatre Castle light up instead of the Violent Bologna to frame 21, the one-man-band behind which the violinist and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Manzan, Treviso, born in 1976. This project was developed in 2005 with the debut album inspired by the seventies cop and devoted to violence and nihilism musical sound. No quotes from the movie, however, the new album (the third) of Bologna Violent: in “Utopias and small satisfactions”, released in January, is the music lead the way, highlighting the solid musical background of the author, who ranging from classical to pure noise.

Comes from faraway Iceland the first international proposal: the music of Epic Rain has its origins in hip-hop underground, but over the years has expanded its horizons and explore other styles, including cabaret, dark folk, country and blues. Wareika is instead a trio of German home in Hamburg, who happily mixes elements from techno, from house, jazz and classical music, with the joy of playing live improvisations on which to dance.

Much shorter the distance between Cagliari to Sassari, the city from which the De Grinpipol, active training for eight years, and expected to Karel Music Expo in an original acoustic version. Fresh from the press, their new album, “Earworms”, published by Seahorse Recordings, is marked by strong colors indie and new wave, full of keyboards and melodic but also of samples and electronic sounds.

“The riddle of a dream”, a short happenings and Vincenzo Cirillo theater company research The Shadow of Peter, is the interval to the musical evening before taking possession of the stage Adrian Sherwood: the wizard of sound, thirty ‘ year career, he has worked in the areas most diverse music, with the likes of Lee Perry, Primal Scream, Depeche Mode, Asian Dub Foundation, Little Axe and Sinéad O’Connor. His independent label On-U Sound continues to be at the forefront and has recently released the new album of Sherwood, “Survival & Resistance.” His dub show is a special DJ set, a trip on his adventurous and diverse musical universe between dub, reggae and electronic varies, dubstep, jungle, unreleased remixes, advances from the future and rare gems dusted off from the past.

Five sets for the final evening, starting at 20.30. After the award ceremony and exhibition of Iori’s Eyes, winners of Akme ‘, open the Galactic Maya: born in 2010 from the ashes of the dissolved Chinasky, is a band accents and visionary psychedelic sound and characterized by the use of analog instruments, vocal harmonies and electronic intrusion.

Other sounds and atmospheres Edda, the third star of the evening: the former lead singer of the Tribal Rhythm, has resurfaced on the music scene in 2009, after a long absence, with the album “Semper Biot,” followed in February – after a long series of concerts – from “I hate the living”, a hard deep and intense as it is in the style of Stephen “Edda” Rampoldi, Cagliari will be accompanied by battery Sebastian De Gennaro.

The closure is all in the name of “partisan race,” the reading written and performed by Wu Ming 2 (one of the members of the collective literary Wu Ming) and music by Egle Sommacal and Stefano Pilia (but will not be present at the appointment Cagliari) of Maximum Volume, and Paul Pieretto and Federico Oppi Settlefish and A Classic Education. Not only music to Karel Music Expo 2012: In program also includes two reading, presentation and publishing a conference.

The first event is scheduled for Thursday 4 to 20 in the Hall of the Rectorate eighteenth century with “Almost, sweet revenge of Margaret”, a musical reading (Gabriel Farci readings, music by Alessio Meloni) based on the story written by the young Elisa Agus, sixteen, high school student “Michelangelo” of Cagliari, winner of the essay contest “Tales of a winter student”, who for five years published a book with the best stories written by students from Cagliari.

Same space the following afternoon (Friday 5): at 18.30 the writer Sergio Gilles Lacavalla, which has a reading based on his “Rockriminal. Murder Ballads – Stories of rock and damned fool,” a book in which he explores, in true noir style , the origin of the excess, and finally the tragic death of so many “rock star”, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Ian Curtis of Joy Division to Serge Gainsbourg.

Saturday afternoon (October 6), at 18, in Room Acoustics at the Teatro Civico di Castello, holding instead counter the Pesaro Steve Sylvester, versatile artist, best known as the founder of the historic heavy metal band Death SS, but also an actor and director. In Cagliari has, together with the journalist and music critic Gianni Della Cioppa, his book “The necromancer rock”, released in 2011 for the CRAC Editions: a visionary tale, which tells the story of the beginnings of Death SS from the point of view of their founder, documenting the birth of an idea that could unite both his musical passions, both those related to esotericism.

Instead, it will focus on new forms of interpretation of the sacred texts of the conference Biglino Mauro Torinese, a scholar of the history of religions, as well as esteemed translator of the Old Testament from Hebrew old, which will be held on Saturday 6th at 18.30, but at the Cine ERSU-theater “Nanni Loy” (c / o the student’s home, via Trentino).
