Nel capolavoro che Molière fece debuttare nel 1673, Argante è un facoltoso ipocondriaco che si affida ciecamente a guaritori, ciarlatani, parassiti che si fanno pagare a peso d’oro per impiastri, polveri, decotti destinati a guarire malattie inesistenti. Ossessionato dalla paura delle malattie e della morte, il poveretto pende dalle labbra del primo lestofante che riesca a incantarlo: oltre a queste e all’insensato amore per la sua scaltra seconda moglie, null’altro gli interessa. Non le sagge parole di suo fratello, non il senso pratico della fantesca, né tantomeno le pene amorose di sua figlia Angelica. Nella commedia, Argante rinsavirà e saranno, alla fine, tutti felici e soddisfatti.
Il nostro Argante è l’esatto opposto del protagonista molièriano: è cioè convinto di essere sano come un pesce, ma è malato, eccome. “Siete malato qui, nella zucca”, gli rivela suo fratello Beraldo.
Cosa è successo al Malato Immaginario, dopo più di tre secoli dalla sua prima apparizione?
È diventato un nostro contemporaneo, un uomo del nostro tempo: conosce la vita attraverso il filtro dei social network di cui è utente compulsivo, non ha bisogno di passare al vaglio critico ciò che gli viene proposto come realtà. È preda di ossessioni, piccole nevrosi, scatti d’ira e d’entusiasmo quasi sempre immotivati e fondati sul nulla.
