He studied at Dwyer School of Art, the Bronx, and later attended the FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in Manhattan. He began to do the deejay in 1971 to Better Days in New York, where he worked with Tee Scott. His initial musical selection included mainly funk, jazz, rhythm and blues, soul.
Knuckles quickly became noted for his ability and so in 1972 he was hired as a resident DJ at Gallery, New York club, where joined by two popular DJs: Nicky Siano, who was also owner, and Larry Levan, his great friend. The three were among the first, along with Kenny Carpenter, clubs to introduce the technique of “mixing”, ie playing records one after another, without interruption, so that the music flows continuously. Another curious technique, were among the first to use more than two dishes to add sound effects in the transition from one track to another.
Quickly became the main DJ of the most important era of New York, where his name began to turn a lot.
His career took off and started to produce music. His first remix dates back to 1982 for the song “Let no man put as under” First Choice and follow the “I’m going to go” (1985) by Iago. His work as a producer began in 1984 but with “Your Love “a classic of underground electronic music of the eighties, sung by Jamie Principle, characterized by a line repeated arpeggios and a powerful driving bass line. Tara Butler), originally released in a demo version recorded on magnetic tape and intended only for a few radio DJs. A second edition of 1986 was produced on Persona Records label from Principle but in this case never arrived in the Old Continent. In 1987 the record was released in the United States with two songs sung by Principle and produced by Knuckles: “Baby Wants To Ride / Your Love.” The vinyl came in 1989 in Europe. This was the edition most widespread of “Your Love”, recorded under license from various European labels and played in the early British rave. differences with the version of 1986 are almost imperceptible and the two discs are easily confused (as amended by 1987/1989, however, the case is a bit ‘weaker and the song is slower). After numerous singles and remixes in ’91 came his first album: Beyond The Mix. The album contained the hit singles “The Whistle Song” (probably the most famous song by Frankie Knuckles), “Rainfalls” and “Workout”, which not only reached good positions in the dance charts but were also highly appreciated by critics. The journalist Larry Flick of Billboard magazine in 1992 stated there that Knuckles was probably the best artist of dance in America and that his productions “knows the groove, the song and knows the whole picture.” In 1995 she released her second album “Welcome To The Real World” with singer Adeva, containing the hits “Too Many Fish” and “Whadda U Want (From Me)”. In 2004 he released the album “A New Reality”.
His works are known as a remixer of songs by Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, for which he won a Grammy in 1997.
On 25 August 2004 was named in her honor the way in which resides the Warehouse in Chicago: “Honorary Frankie Knuckles Way”.
With his friends in New York David Morales, Satoshi Tomiie and Bobby D’Ambrosio in 1989 founded the Def Mix Productions, whose activity continues today.
