Uno spettacolo sull’umanità, la dignità e il dolore che si nasconde sotto una maschera mostruosa.

The Elephant Man non è soltanto un capolavoro della cinematografia firmato da David Lynch. E’ soprattutto un racconto perfetto, quasi in presa diretta, di un giovane chirurgo, Frederick Treves, che salvò l’Uomo Elefante, al secolo Jospeh Merrick, dalle torture dei freak show della Londra di fine Ottocento.

In un momento storico come quello attuale in cui l’estetica del corpo, della “bellezza a tutti i costi”, sono divenuti un motivo perpetuo e ossessivo, non senza conseguenze finanche drammatiche (si pensi ai danni provocati dalla chirurgia estetica o a patologie impulsive e compulsive letali come la bulimia e l’anoressia), portare sulla scena una storia d’amicizia tra un brillante e ambizioso chirurgo e un “mostro apparente”, capace però di regalare agli altri un universo di poesia e bellezza, significa sovvertire il putrido sistema di vuote apparenze, di fasulle perfezioni, di oscene ostentazioni artificiali a cui siamo ormai assuefatti.

A show about humanity, dignity and pain hiding under a monstrous mask.

The Elephant Man is not only a masterpiece of cinematography signed by David Lynch. E ‘above all a story perfect, almost live, a young surgeon, Frederick Treves, who saved the Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick the century, from the torture of freak show of the late nineteenth century London.

In a historical moment like the present one in which the aesthetics of the body, “beauty at all costs,” they became a reason perpetual and obsessive, not without consequences even dramatic (think of the damage caused by cosmetic surgery or illness and impulsive compulsive lethal as bulimia and anorexia), bring to the stage a story of friendship between a brilliant and ambitious surgeon and a “monster apparent”, but able to give to others a world of poetry and beauty, it means subverting the rotten system of empty appearances, fake perfections, obscene ostentation of which we have become accustomed to artificial.
