Il Campionato europeo Hobie Cat 16 di vela si prepara alla fase finale: da mercoledì 16 fino a sabato 19 ottobre, 71 catamarani si sfideranno nelle acque del Poetto, a Cagliari, per il titolo continentale Open. Oggi la totale mancanza di vento ha costretto il Comitato di regata ad annullare le ultime prove del campionato Youth e della regata di qualificazione per gli Open, dopo alcune ore di attesa in mare.

Il titolo Under 21 è stato assegnato quindi in base ai risultati delle nove prove disputate fino a ieri. Oro e argento vanno in Danimarca: primo posto per Trine Bentzen e Nicolaj Bjornholt, secondo per Daniel Bjornholt e Sofie Slotsgaard. Terzi gli italiani Gianluigi Ugolini e Giulio Zizzari (Compagnia della Vela di Roma).

I fratelli Bjornholt fino allo scorso anno gareggiavano insieme e avevano vinto il titolo europeo nei campionati 2012 in Francia. Poi hanno deciso di separarsi (“Incominciavamo ad essere un po’ troppo pesanti insieme sull’Hobie Cat”) e di formare due equipaggi misti. Le medaglie arrivano comunque. Un pizzico di delusione anche tra i vincitori per aver dovuto rinunciare alle ultime sfide – c’era un solo punto tra primo e secondo – ma un campionato in nove prove fornisce comunque un risulto vero.

Delusione anche per gli equipaggi dell’Open, che avrebbe dovuto conquistare i posti ancora disponibili per arrivare al massimo di 64 previsto per la Gold Fleet, la regata dei migliori, che assegna le medaglie. Chi era rimasto indietro dopo le prime prove e temeva di essere tagliato ha tirato un sospito di sollievo in serata, dopo la premiazione, quando il presidente della Classe Hobie Cat europea, Andy Dinsdale, ha annunciato che la fase finale si sarebbe disputata con una flotta unica di 71 o 72 barche (c’è ancora un dubbio su un equipaggio). Una fornitura supplementare di vele arriverà stanotte in aereo: nella Gold Fleet tutti concorrenti gareggiano con vele nuove dello stesso colore.

Per mercoledì 16 le previsioni a Cagliari annunciano maestrale, con rinforzi significativi nella tarda mattinata e nel pomeriggio, oltre i limiti di sicurezza che una flotta di oltre 70 barche impone. Il Comitato di regata ha deciso di anticipare la prima partenza alle 10, nella speranza di far disputare almeno una prova prima che il vento superi i 25 nodi, oltre i quali la regata dovrebbe essere rinviata.

Stasera intanto sono stati premiati i vincitori dei tre campionati già completati. Oltre agli migliori della flotta Youth, sono stati chiamati sul podio i Master e i partecipanti alla Spinnaker Cup. Tra i veterani primo posto per i cagliaritani Antonello Ciabatti e Luisa Mereu, davanti a due equipaggi tedeschi: Jens Goritz – Juliane Bruggemann e Knud Jansen – Torben Wick. I vincitori della Spi Cup sono invece i francesi Orion Martin – Charlotte Hilliard; secondo l’equipaggio australiano-belga formato da Chris Hancock e Valerie Vanheukelom, terzi i francesi Cedric e Laurent Bader, campioni europei assoluti nel 2012.

Per tutti gli atleti un trofeo in ceramica creato dal laboratorio Raku di Salvatore Farci e Maria Cristina Di Martino.
