L’Ardia è una corsa sfrenata a cavallo fatta in onore di San Costantino, che si svolge ogni anno a Sedilo la sera del 6 luglio e si ripete la mattina del 7 e ricorda la battaglia di Ponte Milvio tra Costantino e Massenzio.

S’Ardia (dal latino “bardiare”: fare la guardia) celebra il ricordo della battaglia di Ponte Milvio del 312 d.C., vinta da Costantino contro Massenzio. Una battaglia storica, che rappresenta la vittoria del cristianesimo sul paganesimo.
Qualche mese prima di luglio il parroco di Sedilo ha il compito di nominare il capocorsa (la prima pandela), preso da un registro, che segue un ordine rigorosamente cronologico.

È guidata da un capocorsa, sa prima pandela, seguito da altri due cavalieri, sa secunda e sa terza, e da tre scorte che rappresentano Costantino e il suo esercito. Vi partecipano, ogni anno, circa 100 cavalieri che, invece, rappresentano i paganiguidati da Massenzio.   Tutto ha inizio con l’iscrizione in un apposito registro, il cui contenuto è noto solo al parroco, in cui, i ragazzi che vogliono fare da capocorsa, si iscrivono. L’iscrizione avviene in giovane età sia per la passione per i cavalli che per una promessa fatta al santo, passano degli anni prima di essere scelti e, la scelta, viene fatta dal parroco seguendo l’ordine cronologico di iscrizione.   Il parroco sceglie il capocorsa, sa prima pandela, e glielo comunica nel periodo della festa di Sant’Antonio, il 16 gennaio.

Il prescelto sceglie, a sua volta, altre due persone, la seconda e la terza pandela, due persone stimate e fidate che lo accompagneranno (è quasi come scegliere i testimoni per il matrimonio!). Ognuno dei tre dovrà scegliere poi una scorta, altri tre cavalieri che avranno l’arduo compito di tenere a bada i cavalieri affinché, al momento della partenza, non superino i capicorsa.   I nomi rimarranno segreti sino al 15 maggio, giorno di Sant’Isidoro, dove, durante la Messa, il parrocco da l’annuncio solenne e i tre cavalieri fanno la loro prima uscita ufficiale per la processione.   Il 29 giugno, giorno dedicato ai Santi Pietro e Paolo, i tre capicorsa, provano in via ufficiale i loro cavalli per testare la loro preparazione. Dal giorno dopo anche gli altri cavalieri possono provare ufficialmente il percorso dell’Ardia con i loro cavalli.   La domenica prima della festa ci sarà la preparazione delle cartucce, caricate a salve, che verranno utilizzate dai fucilieri dell’Ardia durante la corsa e che avranno il duplice compito di avvisare i fedeli che si trovano nel santuario dell’arrivo dell’Ardia e anche quello di guidare i cavalli durante il percorso. I fucilieri vengono invitati ad uno ad uno dal capocorsa.

La Festa inizia il 5 luglio con la Messa celebrata nel santuario al pomeriggio.   La mattina del 6, le tre pandelas, i cavalieri che parteciperanno alla corsa e centinaia di fedeli, partecipano alla Messa solenne. I capicorsa scenderanno al santuario a cavallo avendo cura di prendere dei cavalli diversi rispetto a quelli che useranno la sera per l’ardia, questo è fatto per evitare che gli animali si agitino o che si facciano male. Durante la Messa, il sacerdote, invoca il Santo affinché protegga i cavalieri durante la corsa e da la solenne benedizione.   La sera del 6, tutti quanti i cavalieri si recano a casa della prima pandela per andare, poi, tutti insieme in piazza di Chiesa dove verranno consegnate le bandiere e dove verrà data la benedizione. Inizia così la processione verso il santuario, aperta dalla banda musicale e guidata dal parroco e dal sindaco a cavallo che saranno affiancati da due carabinieri in alta uniforme.

Arrivati all’inizio della strada che porterà giù sino alla chiesa, su “fronte mannu”, il parroco impartisce una seconda benedizione. I cavalieri continuano la loro discesa sino ad arrivare a “su frontigheddu” dove riceveranno una terza benedizione. A questo punto, il parroco, il sindaco e i carabinieri si recheranno alla chiesa e nel mentre i cavalli attendono, frementi, il momento della partenza. I fucilieri spareranno a salve per indicare al capocorsa l’arrivo del parroco e del sindaco alla chiesa e, questo, sarà il segno che l’Ardia può partire. Da questo momento gli occhi di tutti saranno fissi sulla prima pandela che, da un momento all’altro, può decidere di partire.   Il momento della partenza è emozionante sia per chi corre l’ardia che per chi la guarda perché darà inizio ad una corsa sfrenata che lascerà tutti col fiato sospeso.   La prima pandela decide di partire e, dato un segnale alle altre due, sprona il cavallo giù per la ripida discesa. Entrerà poi nell’arco per arrivare alla chiesa. Dietro di lui i 100 cavalli che, tra la polvere e il rumore degli zoccoli, cercheranno di stargli dietro il più vicino possibile.   Arrivati alla chiesa verranno fatti dei giri a passo, di solito 5 o 7, comunque in numero dispari, e ad ogni giro le tre pandelas si fermeranno davanti alla chiesa per farsi il segno di croce, segno che aveva guidato Costantino nella lotta contro Massenzio portandolo alla vittoria.

Quando la prima pandela deciderà i cavalli continueranno la loro corsa giù dalla chiesa verso “sa muredda” dove verranno fatti dei giri in senso orario e gli altri in senso antiorario per tornare su alla chiesa concludendo così l’ardia.   Alla fine le pandelas parteciperanno alla Messa di ringraziamento. Torneranno poi in paese annunciati dai fucileri dove la gente li aspetta quasi come i vincitori di una battaglia.   Il 7 mattina tutto si ripete, con un’atmosfera più serena e familiare.La sera del 7 viene fatta poi la processione in onore del Santo.   Chi non sa o no può andare a cavallo parteciperà all’Ardia a piedi. Questa ha i suoi capicorsa e le sue scorte, una in più rispetto a quelle a cavallo,scelti con le stesse procedure dette sopra. La corsa ha lo stesso svolgimento di quella a cavallo ma sarà una festa per tutti i ragazzi e le ragazze, bambini e bambine, adulti ed anziani che si cimenteranno nella corsa. L’atmosfera è senz’altro più serena ma altrettanto emozionante, soprattutto per chi guiderà la corsa. L’ardia a piedi si svolge due domeniche dopo di quella a cavallo.

On the Sunday before the festival there will be the preparation of cartridges, loaded with blanks, which will be used by riflemen Ardia during the race and will have the dual task of warning the faithful who are in the sanctuary and also the arrival of the Ardia to guide the horses during the route. The fusiliers are invited one by one from capocorsa. The festival begins July 5 with a Mass celebrated in the sanctuary in the afternoon. The morning of the 6th, the three pandelas, riders participating in the race and hundreds of faithful participate in the solemn mass. The first pandela decided to leave and, as a signal to the other two, spurs his horse down the steep descent. Then will come over to the church. Behind him the 100 horses in the dust and the noise of hooves, they will try to keep up as close as possible. At the Church of the facts will turn up, usually 5 or 7, however, an odd number, and at every turn the three pandelas will stop in front of the church to make the sign of the cross, a sign that Constantine had led in the fight against Maxentius bringing to victory. When the first pandela decide the horses continue their run down from the church to “muredda know” where they will be made of turns clockwise and the other counterclockwise to return to the church, thus concluding the ardia. At the end of the pandelas attend the Mass of Thanksgiving.
