Conceived and directed by musician Enzo Favata, the Straits Music is one of the most important events of the summer in Sardinia and is characterized by being a festival unconventional, open to less standardized forms of jazz and other musical languages, from classical to electronic experiments in this edition are well represented, up to the popular music of Sardinia.

Another aspect that gives originality to this festival is the dissemination of concerts in the area of Santa Teresa Gallura, one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean, set among the granite rocks sculpted by wind and beaches with crystal clear sea. The events include traditional and the most anticipated concerts of the famous Rena Bianca beach at sunrise and sunset concerts at the Lighthouse of Capo Testa, and since last year, the central scene of the shows is the suburb of Saint Lucia, an ancient fishing village.

The 2012 festival presents a program with international artists from the United States, Norway, Austria, Mongolia, Bulgaria, France, United Kingdom. The festival also boasts a new initiative (which will be presented separately) with shows at sunset, distributed in different localities of Sardinia and that will precede the event in Santa Teresa Gallura.

The Festival will open Thursday, August 30 (20:00 hours, the parish church) from the main instrument of Sardinian folk music, launeddas, played by two great actors, and Roberto Dante Tangianu Tangianu, testifying to the transmission of this musical culture through the generations. In the evening concerts of international importance (at 21.00 Square Saint Lucia), the trio led by pianist Gwilym Simcock British Goloubev with Yuri on bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums. At 22.30, the multimedia show “Mandala”, visionary work for percussion, live electronics and video by Italian-American Andrea Centazzo, considered among the most important drummers of the last twenty five years.

Friday, August 31 at 20:00 (parish church) concert series begins with the guitar Havar Bendiksen of Norway, while the square Saint Lucia 21.00 you can listen to Violons Barbares, extraordinary trio that combines violin and singing Mongolian folk music of Bulgaria and compelling percussive rhythms. At 22.30 in the same scene will increase the area the famous progressive rock band from last year that brings alive the myth born in the seventies, with Patrizio Fariselli floor, Paolo Tofani on guitars, bass and Ares Tavolazzi UT Gandhi on drums.

Saturday, September 1 returns to the festival Bandakadabra, marching band appreciated by the public over the Straits of Music, which will begin performances on the beach Rena Bianca during the morning and then in the afternoon they will produce in the village streets. At 20.00 will take place the concert of baroque music titled “A Knight of Spain” with the Ensemble Sweet accents, while on the main stage at 21.00 you can attend a special meeting already presented with great success at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival: the Scottish Dave Milligan on piano and Colin Steele on trumpet will sound the horn with Enzo Favata, Danilo Gallo on bass and UT Gandhi on drums. At 22.30 the Norwegian jazz, now constant presence in the Straits Music, is the quartet of saxophonist Henning Gravrok.

Sunday, September 2nd will be a long day of music that begins at dawn on the beach of Rena Bianca with a concert by Austrian Christian Fennesz on guitar and electronics; Bandakadabra the main character will still be on the beaches and along the village streets. The concert at sunset at Capo Testa, even among the traditional events of the festival, is entrusted to Mario Crispi, with the “puffs” for archaic wind instruments, computers and video. The evening will conclude in the Piazza Saint Lucia with Mario Ganau trio (21.00) to be followed at 22.30 the special production “The Secret Life of parks”, a multimedia show with photos and original music led by Enzo Favata and dedicated to parks in Sardinia and Corsica with Peghin Marcello on guitars, Danilo Gallo on bass and UT Gandhi on drums. The day and the festival will conclude with the final party with the artists and Bandakadabra in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

This year the program will add a special section “fuoriorario”, 23.30 (Place of Knowledge of the local library) will take the experiences of particular events with electronic Menion Stefano Ferrari (August 30), Alfonso Santimone (August 31) and ‘unprecedented encounter between Andrea Centazzo and Enzo Favata (September 1)
