HUGH MASEKELA LIVE – ORISTANO – THURSDAY AUGUST 2
Thursday August 2 in Oristano at the Gardens of the seminar, starting at 22, the concert will be held by Hugh Masekela.
Hugh Masekela (1939) is one of the most significant personalities of the second South African music since the ’50s. Trumpeter, flugelhorn player, composer, arranger, listened to the radio the American jazz as a child and began playing the piano. At 14 he received his first trumpet, which he learned to play in the banda town of Johannesburg. The breakthrough came when, in ’58, he played with a very famous South African group, The Manhattan Brothers, and soon after was cast in the musical King Kong which took part in another rising star of South African music, Miriam Makeba, who would become his wife . With other future national music personalities, including the pianist Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim) and drummer Makaya Ntsoko, founded the Jazz Epistles, the first African group to record a jazz record. In 1960, after the terrible massacre at Sharpeville, Masekela decided to break with the apartheid regime and, like many of his fellow musicians, he chose exile. Since then he has traveled the world and played with almost every major jazz stars, so that today, ‘the man with the horn’, is considered a living legend.
