Un avvocato di grido non può staccare occhi e orecchie dal telefono, nemmeno a cena, e non vede quel che accade in casa sua, ai suoi figli. Una produttrice televisiva intravede lo strumento per confezionare un reportage di successo in un ragazzo che si vende sulle videochat hard insieme ad altri minorenni. Un’altra donna, reduce da un lutto profondo, cerca conforto presso uno sconosciuto on line, mentre il marito accumula debiti. Immerse nel virtuale, sconnesse l’una rispetto all’altra, le vite di queste persone vengono brutalmente sconvolte dalla realtà e intrecciate tra loro dal destino.

La sua passione per la lettura cresce a tal punto da spronarla a salvare i libri dai roghi che i militari nazisti appiccano durante le loro rappresaglie e a rubarli dalle biblioteche per condividerli con il ragazzo ebreo che i suoi genitori adottivi cercano di salvare nel loro sottoscala.
