IN OCCASIONE DEL CENTENARIO DALLO SCOPPIO DELLA PRIMA GUERRA MONDIALE IL MUSEO MURATS PRESENTA UNA MOSTRA, SULLA GRANDE GUERRA E IL TEMA DELLA GUERRA IN GENERALE, ATTRAVERSO UN PROGETTO DELL’ARTISTA TONINO MATTU.

Il Comune di Samugheo e il Museo MURATS presentano La Grande Notte una mostra di Tonino Mattu curata dal critico Ivo Serafino Fenu. La mostra è realizzata in occasione del centenario dallo scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale, ed è composta da una serie di lavori, quali dipinti su tela, sculture e installazioni che analizzano il tema della Grande guerra ma affrontano anche la tematica della guerra in generale.

La mostra verrà inaugurata domenica 22 giugno alle ore 18:30 presso il Museo MURATS e occuperà la prima sala del piano terra. Mentre negli altri spazi del Museo sarà visitabile la collezione tessile con l’esposizione permanente dei più pregiati manufatti del tessile sardo.
La mostra sarà composta da una serie di tele e sculture che narrano, attraverso una visione inquieta e ironica, l’effetto stralunante di quello che la grande guerra e tutte le guerre possono rappresentare. La mostra, dall’evocativo titolo La Grande Notte, denuncia lo straniamento e l’anomalia di un fatto che, pur considerato disumano da tutti, è sempre presente nella storia dell’uomo, un buio delle coscienze che si ripete quasi senza che gli uomini ricordino le devastanti conseguenze. Della mostra fa parte anche un’installazione, formata da una serie di cartoline, foto e lettere ricreate dall’artista, che vuole evocare una sorta di archivio, perduto e poi ritrovato, di particolari di vita privata di coloro che sono stati coinvolti in questo crudele evento, una sorta di monumento di informazioni mai arrivate a destinazione.

La mostra, curata da Ivo Serafino Fenu, è composta da opere inedite e approfondisce la ricerca che Tonino Mattu ha orientato da diverso tempo verso quel retaggio di sangue e follia, individuale e collettiva, che ha impregnato il Novecento ma, sempre, sfuggendo alla trappola del racconto didascalico o cronachistico e, con intelligenza e sensibilità, ha recuperato lacerti di memoria per parlare dell’oggi. Seguendo l’insegnamento di un maestro qual è Christian Boltansky, identificandosi con la sua poetica ma differenziandosene nella prassi, ha prodotto opere pervase da una dimensione funerea, con la morte che incombe e lascia, dietro sé, il senso incolmabile della perdita. Tuttavia, se l’artista francese ha un approccio da entomologo che ricerca, colleziona e appunta, ora materialmente ora virtualmente, documenti di quel

passato, tramite foto, video, oggetti appartenuti a singoli individui, riuniti in veri e propri memoriali di storie minime che riscrivono grandi assenze, Tonino Mattu, partendo anch’egli dall’utilizzo di tali reperti, ne sugge l’essenza che rielabora pittoricamente, sostituendosi al tempo nell’opera di corrosione e consunzione della memoria. Non una poetica dell’oggetto in sé significante, bensì una manipolazione del soggetto poeticamente evocato e restituito a nuova vita, in un serrato dialogo con la contemporaneità. E, prosegue Fenu, “a cent’anni dalla tragedia, dove il racconto storico mostra i suoi limiti nella trasmissione della memoria, è, ancora una volta, l’arte – stavolta quella di Tonino Mattu –, a sollevare il velo dell’oblio e a risarcire veri e propri buchi neri della storia recente. Con l’istallazione La Grande Notte, ha messo davanti ai nostri occhi gli abissi della coscienza e la sua capacità di generare mostri, ci ha resi corresponsabili e, raccontandoci la “banalità del male”, ha smascherato la nostra presunzione di esserne immuni”.

Per il Direttore del MURATS Baingio Cuccu e il Sindaco di Samugheo Antonello Demelas questa mostra è un’importante apertura del Museo verso una tematica di forte impatto storico e sociale, verso l’analisi di un evento che all’apparenza sembra molto distante ma che si è già ripetuto rischia di rimaterializzarsi in un qualsiasi momento storico, magari diverso nella forma ma simile nella sostanza. Indagare, analizzare, guardare e ascoltare, questo è un compito imprescindibile per un Museo, con La Grande Notte il MURATS focalizza l’attenzione verso la memoria storica con un richiamo affinché non si dimentichi.

Tonino Mattu nasce a Nuoro nel 1979. Autodidatta, nel 2003 viene selezionato dall’associazione culturale Sottopiano Beaux-Arts di Cagliari per rappresentare la giovane arte sarda in una rassegna di tecniche calcografiche. Nel 2005 soggiorna per diversi mesi in Inghilterra, dove ha modo di confrontarsi con alcune delle nuove correnti artistiche nell’ambito delle arti visive. Nel corso del 2009 soggiorna a Berlino. Vive e lavora a Oristano. ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR FROM THE OUTBREAK OF THE Murats MUSEUM PRESENTS AN EXHIBITION ON THE GREAT WAR AND THE THEME OF THE WAR IN GENERAL, A PROJECT BY ARTIST TONINO MATTU.

The City and the Museum of Samugheo Murats present The Big Night Tonino Mattu an exhibition curated by the critic Ivo Serafino Fenu. The exhibition has been organized on the occasion of the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, and is composed of a series of works, such as paintings on canvas, sculptures and installations that analyze the theme of the Great War but also address the issue of war in general.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on Sunday 22 June at 18:30 at the Museum Murats and will occupy the first room on the ground floor. As in other areas of the Museum will be open the textile collection with the permanent exhibition of the finest artifacts from the Sardinian textiles.
The exhibition will consist of a series of paintings and sculptures that narrate, through a vision restless and ironic, bewildering the effect of what the great war and all wars can be. The exhibition, with the evocative title The Big Night, denounced the alienation and the anomaly of a fact that, while considered inhumane by all, is always present in human history, a darkness of conscience that is repeated almost without men remember the devastating consequences. The exhibition is also part of an installation, consisting of a series of postcards, photos, letters and recreated by the artist, who wants to evoke a sort of archive, lost and then found, in particular the private lives of those who have been involved in this cruel event, a sort of monument to information never reached their destination.

The exhibition, curated by Ivo Serafino Fenu, consists of unpublished works and deepens the research that Tonino Mattu has focused for some time to the legacy of blood and madness, individual and collective, which has permeated the twentieth century but, again, escaping the trap the narrative or didactic chronicle and, with intelligence and sensitivity, recovered fragments of memory to speak of today. Following the teaching of a teacher that he is Christian Boltansky, identifying with his poetic differenziandosene but in practice, has produced works imbued with a size funereal, with the impending death and leaves behind him, the sense of loss unbridgeable. To the Director of Murats Baingio Cuccu and the Mayor of Samugheo Antonello Demelas this exhibition is an important opening of the Museum to an issue of strong historical and social impact, to the analysis of an event that is apparently far but that is already repeated is likely to re-materialize at any moment in time, maybe different in shape but similar in substance. Investigate, analyze, watch and listen, this is an indispensable task for a Museum, with The Big Night Murats focuses the attention to the historical memory with a reminder not to forget.

Tonino Mattu was born in Nuoro in 1979. Self-taught, in 2003, he was selected by the cultural Sottopiano Beaux-Arts in Cagliari to represent the young Sardinian art in an exhibition of intaglio techniques. In 2005, staying for several months in England, where he was able to deal with some of the new artistic trends in the visual arts. In 2009, stays in Berlin. Lives and works in Oristano.
