“Ricucire il mondo” è un progetto espositivo dei Musei Civici di Cagliari, del Museo MAN di Nuoro e della Fondazione Stazione dell’arte di Ulassai dedicato a Maria Lai (1919-2013), una delle figure femminili più importanti e affascinanti della storia dell’arte italiana della seconda metà del Novecento. L’esposizione, realizzata grazie al contributo della Fondazione Banco di Sardegna, propone un percorso cronologico e tematico strutturato in tre diverse sedi: il Palazzo di Città di Cagliari, il Museo MAN di Nuoro, La Fondazione Stazione dell’arte e le opere nel paese di Ulassai. Con più di trecento opere provenienti da raccolte sia pubbliche sia private, oltre che dalla collezione della famiglia, Ricucire il mondo è la prima retrospettiva completa dedicata all’artista.
Cagliari – Palazzo di città (Inaugurazione giovedì 10 luglio ore 19)
Il Palazzo di città di Cagliari ospiterà la prima parte del progetto, a cura di Anna Maria Montaldo, direttrice dei Musei Civici, dedicato alla produzione dell’artista dagli anni Quaranta alla metà degli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso. Il percorso espositivo, articolato in aree tematiche, muove dal cospicuo corpus di disegni, realizzati a penna o matita a partire dai primi anni Quaranta, per arrivare alle tempere dedicate al tema del lavoro femminile, alla produzione ispirata alla tessitura (lavagne, libri cuciti, geografie), fino ai Paesaggi, le Terrecotte, i Pani, i Presepi e i Telai degli anni Settanta, centrali nella produzione dell’artista. La parte cagliaritana della mostra sarà arricchita dalla presentazione di materiale documentario, interviste e filmati d’archivio a ricostruire alcune tra le tappe più significative del percorso creativo dell’artista. Tra questi anche il celebre video della performance collettiva Legarsi alla montagna, realizzata a Ulassai nel 1981, lavoro chiave nello sviluppo dei linguaggi dell’artista, identificato come possibile elemento unificante le tre sedi del progetto.
Nuoro – Museo MAN (Inaugurazione venerdì 11 luglio ore 19)
Il MAN di Nuoro ospiterà la seconda parte della mostra, a cura di Barbara Casavecchia e Lorenzo Giusti, direttore del museo, dedicata alla produzione di Maria Lai successiva ai primi Ottanta, un momento di particolare intensità creativa per l’artista, portato avanti in sintonia con gli sviluppi delle coeve ricerche internazionali di ambito performativo, relazionale e pubblico. Oltre a Legarsi alla montagna, la celebre azione collettiva del 1981, in mostra saranno presentati alcuni tra i principali interventi ambientali realizzati successivamente, da La disfatta dei varani (Camerino, 1983) a Essere è Tessere (Aggius, 2008). La mostra ricostruisce le tappe principali di questo percorso tramite opere, materiali documentari, foto e video, intrecciandole alla ricerca svolta da Lai nell’ambito del teatro e della performance. Un altro elemento nodale del percorso espositivo (che comprende alcune importanti serie di lavori, tra cui Lenzuoli, Libri cuciti e d’artista, Geografie e Telai) è la relazione con il mondo dell’infanzia e della didattica, esplorata da Maria Lai tramite la produzione di fiabe, libri, giochi e laboratori, volti a coinvolgere nella riflessione sul potenziale liberatorio dell’arte ogni genere di pubblico, fino dalla più giovane età.
Claudia Losi & Antonio Marras – Come piccole api operaie
Un progetto speciale, frutto di una collaborazione tra l’artista Claudia Losi e lo stilista Antonio Marras, amico e collaboratore di Maria Lai, unisce idealmente le sedi di Cagliari e Nuoro. A Cagliari l’intervento collega la facciata del museo e le vie circostanti con l’interno di una sala al piano terra, dove un’opera di Lai sarà visibile anche durante la notte. A Nuoro, una tessitura di fili metallici partirà dall’esterno del MAN per attraversarne mura e finestre, fino a “legare” alle pareti una galassia di piccoli oggetti (cartoncini d’auguri, grafiche, gioielli, stoffe, ricami), realizzati da Maria Lai nel corso della propria vita e donati ad amici e parenti, ricostruendone il ruolo di artista attiva nella propria comunità, che generosamente condivide e “disperde” la propria opera.
Ulassai – Una Stazione per l’arte (Inaugurazione sabato 12 luglio ore 11.30)
Terza sede del progetto è il paese di Ulassai, che, in occasione delle mostre di Cagliari e Nuoro, con il coordinamento di Cristiana Giglio, direttore della “Stazione dell’Arte”, presenta due occasioni di visita. La prima coinvolge gli spazi dell’antica stazione ferroviaria, oggi sede del Museo dedicato a Maria Lai, dove, per la prima volta dalla sua apertura, avvenuta nel 2006, le sale saranno riallestite secondo il progetto originale, ideato dalla stessa Maria Lai, con uno spazio dedicata alle carte geografiche, uno con gli omaggi ai maestri (Salvatore Cambosu, Giuseppe Dessì, Arturo Martini) ed una ospitante l’installazione Invito a tavola. La seconda occasione di visita riguarda invece gli interventi ambientali nel paese di Ulassai, realizzati a partire dai primi anni Ottanta. Il giorno dell’inaugurazione una navetta collegherà i diversi siti, dando la possibilità al visitatore di muoversi con facilità all’interno di quello che può essere considerato un vero e proprio museo all’aperto, con opere quali La strada delle capre cucite, Il gioco del volo dell’oca, il Telaio soffitto del lavatoio e molti altri. Una nuova segnaletica faciliterà la visita, con percorsi a terra e cartelli illustrativi.“Mending the World” is an exhibition project of the Civic Museums of Cagliari, Nuoro and the MAN Museum of Art Station Foundation Ulassai dedicated to Mary Lai (1919-2013), one of the most important and fascinating female figures in the history of ‘Italian art of the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the contribution of Fondazione Banco di Sardegna, offers a chronological and thematic structured in three different locations: the City Palace of Cagliari, the MAN Museum in Nuoro, The Foundation Station and the works of art in the country Ulassai. With more than three hundred works from both public and private collections, as well as from the collection of the family, Mending the World is the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to the artist.
Cagliari – City Palace (Opening Thursday, July 10 at 19)
The Palace of the city of Cagliari will host the first part of the project, curated by Anna Maria Montaldo, director of the Civic Museum, dedicated to the artist’s production from the forties to the mid-eighties of the last century. The exhibition, divided into subject areas, moving from the large body of drawings, made with a pen or pencil from the early forties, to arrive at tempera dedicated to the theme of women’s work, the production inspired by the texture (blackboards, books sewn, geographies), to the landscapes, the crockery, the breads, the Nativity and the frames of the seventies, central to the artist’s production. The part of the exhibition will be enriched by Cagliari presentation of documentary material, interviews and archival footage to reconstruct some of the most significant stages of the creative artist. Among these is the famous video of the performance collective Tie the mountain, made in Ulassai in 1981, key work in the development of the languages ​​of the artist, identified as a possible unifying the three sites of the project.
Nuoro – MAN Museum (Opening Friday, July 11 at 19)
The MAN in Nuoro host the second part of the exhibition, curated by Barbara Casavecchia and Lorenzo Giusti, director of the museum, dedicated to the production of Mary Lai subsequent to the early eighties, a moment of particular intensity for the creative artist, carried out in line with developments in contemporary international research field of performative, relational and public. In addition to Tie the mountain, the collective action of the famous 1981 exhibition will be presented in some of the major environmental interventions conducted subsequently, by the defeat of the monitor lizards (Camerino, 1983) is to be Weaving (Aggius, 2008). The exhibition traces the main stages of this journey through the works, documentary materials, photos and videos, interweaving research conducted by Lai in theater and performance. Another central element of the exhibition (which includes some important series of works, including bed sheets, sewn and artist’s books, geographies and frames) is the relationship with the world of childhood and education, explored by Maria Lai production of fairy tales, books, games and workshops, designed to engage in reflection on the liberating potential of art every kind of audience, up from an early age.
Claudia Losi & Antonio Marras – Like little worker bees
A special project, a collaboration between the artist Claudia Losi and fashion designer Antonio Marras, friend and collaborator of Maria Lai, it ideally combines the offices of Cagliari and Nuoro. In Cagliari intervention connects the front of the museum and the surrounding streets with the interior of a room on the ground floor, where a work of Lai will be visible even at night. In Nuoro, a weaving of wire will start from the outside of the MAN he cross walls and windows, to “bind” the walls a galaxy of small items (greeting cards, graphics, jewelry, fabrics, embroideries), made by Mary Lai during his life and donated to friends and family, reconstructing the role of artist active in their community, who generously shares and “scatters” his work.
Ulassai – A Station for the Arts (Opening Saturday, July 12 11:30 am)
Third is the country where the project Ulassai, which, on the occasion of the exhibitions of Cagliari and Nuoro, with the coordination of Christian Giglio, director of “Art Station”, has two opportunities to visit. The first involves the spaces of the old train station, now the Museum dedicated to Mary Lai, where, for the first time since its opening in 2006, the salt will be reorganized according to the original design, created by Maria Lai, with a space dedicated to maps, one with tributes to the masters (Cambosu Salvatore, Giuseppe Dessi, Arturo Martini) and a host installation Invitation to the table. The second opportunity to visit regards environmental interventions in the country Ulassai, made since the early eighties. On the day of a shuttle will connect the different sites, giving the visitor the opportunity to move with ease in what can be considered a true open-air museum, with works such as The Road goats sewn, The game the flight of the goose, the ceiling frame of the wash and many others. A new sign will facilitate the visit, with trails and information signs on the ground.
