La città di Amburgo è il principale porto tedesco e, dopo la capitale Berlino, è anche la più importante città della Germania. E’ una città moderna, ma al tempo stesso profondamente legata alle sue tradizioni, tra cui quella radicata dei Mercatini di Natale.

Amburgo è una di quelle città che danno il meglio di sè nel periodo natalizio. L’Asterhaus (i moderni grandi magazzini sulla storica passeggiata Jungfermstieg, la via dello shopping di lusso), il Karstadt e l’Europa Passage (il nuovissimo centro commerciale dalla forma di nave) sono un brulicare di luci e lo stesso dicasi per i negozi sulla piazza del municipio, la Rathausmarkt, e le vie principali della città, la Hanckibergstrasse o la Willy-Brandt Strasse.

Nel centro di Amburgo i mercatini natalizi sono ben 6. Il più importante è senza dubbio l’Historicher Weihnachtsmarkt, il mercatino storico della Rathausmarkt che con le sue 150 casette di legno, ognuna diversa dall’altra, illumina tutta la piazza con le sue luci (per ammirare uno splendido panorama il consiglio è di salire sulla torre di St.Petri che dà proprio sulla piazza). Il signor Bernhard Paul lo fondò nel 1974 e da allora si prende cura personalmente degli stand.

Mercatino di Natale Storico
E’ il più importante Mercatino di Natale di Amburgo e si svolge nella piazza del Municipio (Rathausmarkt). Tra le molte attrazioni, vi sono quelle per i bambini, come il Babbo Natale volante (fliegende Weihnachtsmann) sopra il Municipio e la Parata del Natale (Hamburger Weihnachtsparade), che si svolge tutti i pomeriggi dei sabati d’Avvento.

Vi si trovano oggetti d’antiquariato, decorazioni natalizie fatte a mano, sculture in legno intagliato e piatti e dolci tipici come le mele al cartoccio (Apfeltaschen) e il vino caldo speziato (Gluhwein). Un trenino percorre tutto il perimetro del mercatino ed è preso d’assalto dai bambini, anche se… per loro la vera attrazione è la slitta volante! Alzando gli occhi al cielo, proprio nel mezzo della piazza ma a mezz’aria, c’è una slitta trainata da 4 renne, con un Babbo Natale in carne e ossa che racconta fiabe e 3 volte al giorno (alle 16, 18 e 20) conduce la slitta attaverso il cielo della Rathausmarkt lungo possenti binari in metallo.

Lì vicino si trova Un altro mercatino, quello di St.Petri, aperto ogni giorno dalle 11 alle 21 fino al 30 dicembre (eccetto Natale e vigilia).
Quello di Monckerbergstrasse si estende dalla Spitalerstrasse alla Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz (11-21 fino al 30 dicembre eccettp il 24 e 25) mentre a St.Pauli, intorno a Spielbudenplatz, un Babbo Natale quasi nudo e con occhiali da sole accoglie i visitatori nel quartiere a luci rosse dove del 2007 si tiene forse il mercatino di Natale più dissacrante d’Europa, dove bancarelle dalle insegne ammiccanti vendono regali natalizi “alternativi” (per maggiori di anni 18, fino al 23 dicembre, ogni giorno dalle 17 alle 23, venerdi dalle 17 alle una di notte, sabato dalle 13 all’una e domenica dalle 13 alle 23).

Amburgo è la seconda città della Germania dopo Berlino e negli ultimi anni sta diventando sempre più una meta turistica primaria sia per il turismo nazionale, sia per quello internazionale.

Tra la stazione centrale e Gänsemarkt, l’antico mercato delle oche, si trova il centro storico di Amburgo. Esso è la parte più antica di Amburgo e comprende edifici come la Chilehaus, creazione dell’arte espressionista, e il quartiere degli uffici, noto come Kontorhaus. In alcuni punti si respira ancora l’atmosfera di una volta, ad esempio sulla strada conosciuta come “Cremon”, dove in passato i palazzi residenziali erano adibiti anche a magazzini e per questo erano dotati di un’uscita sia verso i canali, sia verso la strada.

La magnifica chiesa di St. Petri, che si trova nella zona commerciale racchiusa dalla Mönckebergstraße, venne fondata nel XII secolo e venne ricostruita dopo il grande incendio che colpì la città nel 1842.
Da non perdere nella chiesa di St. Jacobi sono l’organo costruito da Arp Schnitger e il mosaico realizzato su progetto di Oskar Kokoschka per l’altare della chiesa di St. Nicolai all’Hopfenmarkt, distrutta nel corso della Seconda Guerra mondiale. Le rovine di St. Nicolai con l’antico campanile sono state conservate come monito. Di sera è possibile godere di una splendida vista sulla città dalle guglie della chiesa che è considerata simbolo di Amburgo, St. Michaelis o il Michel. Costruita tra il 1751 e il 1762, essa non solo è la costruzione più significativa in stile barocco della città, ma è dotata anche del più grande campanile con orologio della Germania, con quadranti che superano i 24 metri. Il campanile raggiunge un’altezza di 132 metri ed è dotato di una piattaforma panoramica da cui è possibile ammirare il porto e la città.

Il porto di Amburgo è senza dubbio una tappa da non mancare. Con quasi 13.000 navi provenienti da tutto il mondo ogni anno, esso è il secondo porto in ordine di grandezza d’Europa. E’ questa sorta di città nella città che è valso ad Amburgo l’appellativo di Porta d’Europa. Tra le zone del porto da non dimenticare c’è la centenaria Speicherstadt, il più grande complesso di magazzini di deposito merci esistente al mondo. Qui sono conservate merci preziose come caffè, thè, cacao, spezie, tabacco, computer e vi si trova il più grande magazzino di tappeti orientali del mondo. Le mura massicce della Speicherstadt servono a preservare questi ed altri tesori: scorci idilliaci dei canali, lo stile gotico delle strutture di mattoni, bizzarri frontoni e torrette… tutto diventa ancora più romantico al crepuscolo quando la Speicherstadt è illuminata.

Il lago Alster è situato nel cuore verde della città di Amburgo ed è un vero e proprio paradiso per chi ama rilassarsi in barca. Nel XIII secolo le acque del piccolo fiume Alster e dei suoi minuscoli affluenti vennero sbarrate da una diga e si formò così questo lago, che rappresenta oggi un punto d’incontro per il relax e il jogging. Non solo, ma può rappresentare anche un ottimo luogo per fare shopping! In effetti, sulle sue sponde passa la Jungfernstieg, una delle vie più amate per passeggiare e fare shopping fra grandi magazzini e raffinati negozi.

Da Cagliari non esiste volo diretto per Amburgo. Kalariseventi consiglia l’avvicinamento a Roma Fiumicino con Alitalia o Meridiana per poi prendere il volo Lufthansa diretto ad Amburgo via Monaco di Baviera.

Christmas Market History

It ‘s the most important Christmas Market in Hamburg and takes place in the Town Hall Square (Rathausmarkt). There are antiques, handmade Christmas decorations, sculptures carved wooden dishes and sweets such as baked apples (Apfeltaschen) and the hot spiced wine (Gluhwein). A mini train runs around the perimeter of the market and is mobbed by children, though … for them the real draw is the slide wheel!
