Hortense Laborie è una cuoca rinomata che vive nel Périgord. Con sua grande sorpresa, il Presidente della Repubblica la nomina responsabile della sua cucina personale all’Eliseo. Nonostante le gelosie degli chef che operano nelle cucine principali del Palazzo, Hortense riesce ad imporsi grazie al suo carattere forte e alla sua tempra. La genuinità della sua cucina sedurrà in poco tempo il Presidente, ma quello che accade dietro le quinte, nelle stanze del potere, le creerà molti ostacoli.

Un professore svizzero, Raimund Gregorius, mentre si reca a scuola, salva la vita di una giovane portoghese che sta per gettarsi nel fiume. L’episodio scuote l’uomo, che, leggendo il libro trovato nella giacca dimenticata sul ponte della giovane, viene preso dalla voglia di rintracciare la ragazza in Portogallo e conoscere l’autore del libro. Il viaggio gli farà scoprire la realtà di un paese vittima della dittatura di Salazar degli anni ’70, ma soprattutto, gli farà riscoprire se stesso.

Ma ecco che la routine di Reggie, Wilf e Cissy viene sconvolta dall’arrivo a pensione di Jean Horton, elemento mancante e artista di punta del loro leggendario quartetto, nonché ex moglie di un Reggie ancora ferito

Reduce dall’ultima seduta di chemioterapia, Ida torna a casa per scoprire il marito, che credeva un sostegno sicuro, a letto con una collega di lavoro. Intanto deve partire per l’Italia perché la figlia sta per sposarsi ed ha deciso che le nozze si faranno a Sorrento ma per la strada verso l’aereoporto provoca un incidente con un’altra macchina, per scoprire che l’investito è il padre dello sposo, che non aveva mai incontrato.

Germain è un professore di letteratura costretto a correggere compiti scritti male e impregnati di banalità. In uno dei suoi tanti frustranti pomeriggi gli capita fra le mani l’avvincente tema di Claude, strutturato come un racconto a puntate, nel quale il ragazzino racconta come è riuscito ad insinuarsi nelle vite della famiglia di Rafa, suo compagno di classe, dopo mesi di osservazione insistente della “casa borghese” in cui abita. Germain capisce che Claude ha del talento e, incurante delle conseguenze, lo convince e lo aiuta a spingersi sempre più oltre.

Germain realizes that Claude has the talent and, regardless of the consequences, convinces him and helps him to go further and further beyond.
