Zurigo è una delle mete classiche dei Mercatini di Natale e vanta il mercatino coperto più grande d’Europa, quello della Hauptbanhof.
A Zurigo l’usanza dei Mercatini di Natale è proprio sentita, a tal punto da volerlo dimostrare a gran voce a chi non lo sappia! In effetti, per quei turisti che scegliessero di arrivare in città con il treno, è prevista fin dalla stazione centrale un’immersione totale ed immediata tra le simpatiche bancarelle, una dimostrazione istantanea dello spirito natalizio svizzero
Si tratta del Mercatino di Natale della Hauptbahnhof, che si svolge al piano inferiore della stazione centrale, per la precisione in quella che viene chiamata ShopVille – RailCity. Questo è considerato il più grande Mercatino di Natale al coperto di tutta Europa! Dal 1993, ogni anno per l’Avvento la stazione centrale di Zurigo diventa un’immensa distesa di casette in legno, con tanto di tetto innevato artificilamente. A colpire immediatamente l’attenzione dei visitatori è il maestoso albero di Natale al centro della stazione, addobbato con più di 7000 pietre Swarovski che emanano uno scntillìo incantevole ed incredibilmente attraente. Tutt’intorno all’albero sono disposti oltre 160 stands, che espongono ogni genere di prodotto: cappelli di forgia raffinata, bijoux pregiati, candele e lampade profumate, oggetti in legno intagliato, sciarpe in seta, decorazioni natalizie, giacche e giocattolli. L’ offerta gastronomica poi è vastissima: patate al cartoccio, salmone affumicato, cervelat (salsicce), pannocchie arrostite, crepes, raclette di formaggio sul pane e formaggi tipici. Per i golosi di dolci, c’è da perder la testa tra i Nideltafeli (le caramelle a base di burro e zucchero caramellato), le praline di ogni forma e gusto, le tavolette di cioccolato decorate, il Magenbrot (pane speziato ricoperto di glassa), il panpepato, il torrone e i croccanti, i brownies, le frittelle di mele e i Berliner (i bomboloni).
Ma Zurigo offre un meraviglioso Mercatino di Natale anche all’aperto, nella bellissima Hirschenplatz, all’interno della città vecchia (Altstadt). Siamo vicini alla Niederdorfstrasse e al Rosenhof, il Municipio, e in questa cornice medievale è inserito il Mercatino di Natale più antico della città . Qui, 120 casette di artigiani e venditori ambulanti da tutto il mondo attirano i passanti con i loro prodotti fatti a mano: decorazioni natalizie, maglierie, candele, biglietti augurali, bambole e ceramiche. Negli stand gastronomici si trovano salsicce arrostite di vario tipo, Langos (bruschette ungheresi all’aglio), dolcetti natalizi, vin brulè, caffè, birre ed il tipico Jagertee (letteralmente il tè del cacciatore), ovvero una bevanda calda a base di té nero, obstler (particolare grappa alla frutta) ed erbe speziate.
C’è anche un Mercatino di Natale che potremmo definire più modaiolo: è il City-Weihnachtsmarkt, il Mercatino di Natale che si tiene dal 1994 nella Bahnhofstrasse, il cuore dello shopping cittadino. L’atmosfera è molto riservata e intima tra le 12 casette di legno, dov’è possibile acquistare candele, CD, oggetti d’artigianato in legno, giocattoli, fragranze, accessori di moda, vin brulè, panpepato, salcicce alla griglia, caldarroste e biscotti.
Infine c’è il Mercatino di Natale della Werdmühleplatz, reso particolarmente dolce e sereno dai cori dei bambini sotto l’albero di Natale.

Si tratta di uno dei mercatini più recenti della città , ma si è già conquistato un posto nei cuori degli zurighesi grazie alla sua peculiarità : il “Singing Christmas Tree”. Su un palco a forma di albero di Natale, graziosamente decorato e alto quanto una casa, vari cori della regione presentano il meglio del proprio repertorio natalizio.

L’Heiliger Bim Bam rappresenta un’alternativa ai mercatini di Natale convenzionali di Zurigo. Alla sua quarta edizione, l’Heiliger Bim Bam si svolgerà nell’incantevole centro culturale Plaza, nella Badenerstrasse 109.
Dal 2012, inoltre, esiste un Heiliger Bim Bam anche da giovedì 18 a domenica 21 dicembre nella MAAG Halle della stazione di Hardbrücke. I locali della ex fabbrica vengono pervasi dagli inebrianti profumi di vin brûlé e cupcake, da musica da discoteca e da una molteplicità di bancarelle.

Zurigo ha circa 370.000 abitanti e, pur non essendo molto grande, oltre ad essere la più importante città della Svizzera, è uno dei principali centri finanziari a livello mondiale. E’ situata al centro dell’Europa, nel cuore della Svizzera, a 400 metri d’altezza lungo le sponde settentrionali dell’omonimo lago. Zurigo è una metropoli davvero sorprendente, con un’atmosfera multiculturale ed una varietà di offerte del tutto insolite. E’ un centro culturale, scientifico ed economico, con modernissime infrastrutture perfettamente integrate in un ambiente naturale, luogo ideale di studi e ricerche a livello internazionale. Ma soprattutto, verrebbe da dire, è un mix unico nel suo genere: da un lato il meraviglioso paesaggio del lago e delle Alpi innevate, le meraviglie artistiche in più di 50 musei e oltre 100 gallerie, dall’altra i prestigiosi nomi della moda internazionale, la vita notturna più intensa della Svizzera e gli stabilimenti balneari pubblici in riva al lago.
La visita della città comincia naturalmente dal centro storico. Qui si trova il Grossmünster, il simbolo della città , dove, secondo una leggenda, si fermò il cavallo di Carlo Magno che, scoperte le tombe dei patroni della città Felix e Regula, volle edificarvi una prima chiesa come convento dei canonici. La vicina Wasserkirche invece, sempre secondo una leggenda, fu costruita sul luogo del martirio dei santi, i quali dopo essere stati decapitati riuscirono da soli a spostarsi e seppellirsi poco distante. La chiesa di Grossmünster venne ufficialmente edificata nel periodo tardo-gotico e durante la Riforma fu depredata dei suoi tesori. In quello stesso periodo, fu il punto di partenza della Riforma Protestante svizzero-tedesca, guidata da Huldrych Zwingli e Heinrich Bullinger. La sala aperta dell’Helmhaus era utilizzata come tribunale e mercato coperto, mentre oggi è destinata a spazio espositivo per giovani artisti. La scuola teologica allora annessa al convento fu la culla dell’Università di Zurigo.
L’imponente Università di Zurigo fu costruita nel 1864 su progetto di Gottfried Semper. Mezzo secolo dopo, le sorse accanto un edificio non meno imponente, l’ETH Zurigo, anche detto Scuola Politecnica Federale, oggi frequentata da 30.000 studenti e legata a ben 21 premi Nobel
Il Rathaus, il Municipio cittadino, è una costruzione barocca del 1694-98 e sorge al posto del più antico municipio, che si trovava sul lato del fiume Limmat. Fu edificato sotto la guida del consigliere esperto di costruzioni J.H. Holzhalb.
La Stazione di Stadelhofen sorge come ricostruzione dell’antico edificio, risalente al 1884 e in stile tardo classico, che venne conservato e integrato nella pensilina in calcestruzzo e acciaio progettata dal famoso architetto Santiago Calatrava. La caratteristica più originale dell’edificio risiede nelle insolite porte a ribalta, pensate per la chiusura notturna delle vie che conducono alle banchine e alla zona commerciale sotterranea.
Il Teatro di prosa Schiffbau è il risultato del progetto dell’architetto Peter Kern, che ha trasformato una vecchia fabbrica in uno spazio in cui si fa teatro, musica e gastronomia. Questo ex stabile industriale si è tramutato in una città dentro la città , con una serie di locali di tendenza, con vetrate che lo rendono simile ad un acquario, con quattro palchi ed il teatro, fulcro dell’intera struttura.
Sihlcity, ubicato nell’area di una vecchia cartiera, è il nuovo quartiere a sud di Zurigo, diventato dal 2007 una delle zone più “in†della città . Qui si può scegliere tra più di 13 locali gastronomici, 80 negozi, 9 sale cinematografiche, un hotel ed un centro wellness e fitness. Sihlcity combina vecchie strutture con un’architettura all’ultimo grido.
Circa 150 anni fa, dal fossato che circondava e difendeva la città , è sorta la Bahnhofstrasse, oggi considerata la via degli acquisti per eccellenza di Zurigo. E’ soprattutto questa strada ad aver creato la fama di Zurigo quale paradiso dello shopping, in quanto è l’indirizzo più esclusivo per moda, gioielli ed orologi dei marchi più importanti a livello internazionale, ma soprattutto della città . Ma non è l’unico posto dove scovare i marchi zurighesi, che si nascondono spesso dove sono meno prevedibili, in particolar modo nei quartieri di Aussersihl o Zürich-West, noto anche per la miriade di locali e la vitalità notturna.
La cucina di Zurigo risente naturalmente dell’influenza della vicina Germania e si basa soprattutto su piatti gustosi e calorici. Alla base troviamo la carne, tra cui i grandi wurstel serviti con crauti e sottaceti. Come in tutta la Svizzera, anche a Zurigo è ottima l’offerta di formaggi e di cioccolata. Tra le bevande, è diffuso l’uso della birra, meno quello del vino.
Per raggiungere Zurigo per ora non c’è volo diretto da Cagliari, che verrà istituito a partire dalla prossima primavera 2013.
